So, I spent some time with my friends Sibelius and Audition today, creating a 6-measure "theme" that may go into future audio projects (there are talks of podcasts, YouTube videos, interviews with important folks, etc).

Here's a rough version of it. The melody may or may not sound familiar to you. To the copyright holders of the original songs: this is at least 20% different. To those with a background in music theory:

The original theme is (in c#m): [c#m], [B/D#], [F#]
I shifted the third measure up a second, making the melody: [c#m], [B/D#], [F#], [G#/D]

Apologies for the MIDI-quality; it's just a rough draft.

Comments?

No está mal... La verdad es que si es un prototipo, la veo muy buena, solo falta quitarle esa calidad de MIDI y añadirle efectos y sonidos más profesionales... Se puede usar FL Studio, yo lo uso ;)

Sorry if my English is so bad, I'm Spanish.
Désolé si mon français est mauvais, je suis espagnol.

It is great!
I think I might use it as ringtone, as it is both short and pleasing to the ear :)

I like it as well, and i would probably like it more when it is put through something like FL or Ableton. My other thoughts were with the talent we have available here on the forums, why don't we just make an original piece instead of modifying someone else's?

I mostly use Reason -- which is on my new computer, which is back at college. My laptop has a hard enough time running Notepad...

And that sounds like an awesome idea! There has already been some talk about an "Inspired by Avatar" CD... it's most definitely something worth pursuing!

Aperture

It really sounds very good!
I want to use it as my iPhone ringtone if you allow?

Chords cannot be copyrighted, only the recording itself. Because someone could have came up with the same exact ones that are in the movie :) So you are completely safe.

Really? Who is talking about it and where?

In order to release a CD like this, we need permission from Fox and Atlantic, after that there needs to be some work put into the tracks of course.... and then we need to find a label that would put the money into mastering / making the actual CDs and distributing them...
Is this right? I just write whatever in the signature box?

http://forum.learnnavi.org/index.php?topic=309.0 I think this may be the thing hes talking about. I was also thinking about it as well, but mine would just be a CD of our finished tracks that i would burn to CD and send back to members that sent me a SASE, or I would just put it as a digital CD that you could download online for free.

For us to have "Avatar" word in the release - we need some serious good tracks. Only this is how we can convince Atlantic to let us release it.

I'm not entirely sure about legalities, but if we write our own music, we own the copyright. Also, I know quite a few folks who could hook us up with a deal. If all else fails, self-distributing via iTunes/AmazonMP3 is easy.

I know that the idea was mentioned once, but i may take some initiative and actually send a couple e-mails around to James Horner and see if we cant get the soundtrack sent in a remix-pack style. It would give us access to all the sounds used in each individual song as well as clean vocals to use, which im sure a few of us would appreciate. I'll keep you updated.

Edit. Well, this could be a bit of work. http://www.gsamusic.com/contact/ is where i would have to go to contact him, and then I have to go through his agents.

There are no "remixpacks" for movie OST: the soundtrack is recorded in a huge studio with a lot of different people playing real instruments and the Director (Horner) conducting them. The only thin he can send you is the note book, which will never happen.

Our best bet is to actually improvise and make the chords ourselves.

Damn, and here I was thinking they may have split them up and kept them somewhere else for us such an occasion.

Well if we can come up with the chords, then we can make the MIDIs... it's very possible.

No, MIDIs I meant as remix packs =) Usually, remix packs contain MIDI files of different chords / progressions of the original to ease the remixer's job.

As pretty as remixes can be, wouldn't the whole idea be to come up with something "inspired" by the AVATAR universe?

Oh, and GSA just forwards you to Fox's legal apartment --> dead end.

Nume fpi sänume

Hooray. Oh well. Yeah, i'm sure we will come up with something fitting.
