Avatar 2: The Renegade

I'll be writing my own sequel to Avatar in April as part of Script Frenzy. Yeah, I know there's that pesky intellectual rights thing, but I have no intention of selling the finished script (unless JC happens to want it—I should be so lucky). So I'll be offering it for free as fan fiction on Lulu.com to any interested parties when it's finished (hopefully before summer).

Working title: Avatar 2: The Renegade
Tagline: Old soldiers never die...
Logline: Col. Quaritch launches a one-man war to destroy the Tree of Souls and the Na'vi.

Plot:
It's 6 years later and Col. Quaritch is back...in an avatar body! He wants to finish the job of neutralizing the Na'vi, plus taking revenge on Neytiri. He's pretty pissed about the 2 arrows in the chest. He also wants to take Jake out. Jake has since become jakesully, leader of the Omaticaya.

Jake naturally opposes Quaritch, but also has other problems. Several disgruntled followers of Tsu'tey blame Jake for his death, plus the fact that he is uniltìranyu and has no right to be eyktan. Jake and Neytiri now have 2 kids, a boy and a girl : Fromìk, 4 and Tawyane, 5 (anthropological trivia: Fromìk has 4 fingers and Tawyane, 5 ). Because Neytiri is the wife of  a "five-finger", she also encounters problems with racism/jealousy from some  within the tribe which will ultimately endanger her life. Both kids also get into trouble, like all 6-foot tall children  . Grace is back in her avatar body. Jake couldn't bear her loss and has kept her avatar in stasis, just in case. And it just so happens the time is ripe to wake Grace up.

I've worked out the how and why of Quaritch's resurrection, Grace's resurrection, as well as the fate of the RDA base,and a bunch of other stuff. I should get Cameron's Survival Guide so I won't make any major goofs as far as getting flora and fauna correct, among other things.

This is going to be fun.

What I've posted is just the bare bones. I've put together many more notes and have most of the major scenes sketched out. If you're a bit at a loss for story, I HIGHLY recommend Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder. Txantsan! And write your script with us over at Script Frenzy. It starts April 1st. And it's free.

This is a fanfic forum, the mods say that the necro rule only applies to the language learning forums, where the important topics are frequently updated.

So, as I understand it, it not a necropost.

I do like the added trivial element of one of Neytiri and Jake's kids having 5 fingers though, the idea of Tsu'tey's loyal friends being disdained at Jake's ascension to power and Grace's return but I think that Quartich returns as an Avatar is a little bit of a stretch, but it is your fanfic.

Maybe, but considering the world of Avatar is some 145 years in the future opens up many interesting speculations. They've perfected extended hibernation, very sophisticated gene manipulations (to make the avatars) and even transfer of consciousness (!). And we haven't even touched on nanotechnology.

Considering their advanced technology, here's a couple of very conservative possibilities for Quaritch's return:
1. Body organs regenerated, he's restored to life.
2. All key personnel have their DNA and brain engrams on file. Cloning and subsequent memory download would essentially recreate the person in case of untimely death.
3. Some sort of nanotechnology regeneration/replication, etc.

In my scenario, the Powers That Be anticipated Quaritch's possible demise. A secret directive ordered his body be preserved on Pandora in that event. His avatar was begun and sent en route to Pandora as soon as news of the defeat reached Earth (by tachyon wave communications, and therefore very fast--no more than a few days). Quaritch is then blackmailed by waking up in an avatar. He will get his own body back once he wipes out the Na'vi. But how do you handle becoming your own worst enemy? And essentially becoming a Na'vi may have unforeseen consequences...

Sure my story's a stretch, but it's only make-believe.

Wow, i guess I got told. I hadn't even thought about all the cool stuff we have that far in the future.

That tachyon wave stuff is pretty far advanced though, which would beg the question, why didn't we just use it on a large scale for the ISV's?

Ma Kxawm, how is your script coming?

Script's coming along fine. Getting out my 3-5 pages a day. Script Frenzy's a great motivator for that. Writing scenes in and out of order, according to my mood. Have an outline of sorts and a partial beat sheet. I foresee no problems getting a 120 page script done. Now as to whether it will be any good. . .

Today's Scene (partial):

INT. CAVE - NIGHT
QUARITCH and NEYTIRI are sitting. They are surrounded by bioluminescence, so the cave is lit as if with soft pastel lamps. NEYTIRI is opposite QUARITCH bound and gagged against the cave wall. QUARITCH is wearing thanator skin, a thanator tooth necklace, and is playing with a bowie knife.

QUARITCH
(smiling)
I see you, Neytiri. I don't know how to say it in your blue monkey lingo, but you get the idea.

NEYTIRI registers surprise.

QUARITCH
Yeah, I know you. And all your tribe. Even your kids. It's all in the base computer.

NEYTIRI struggles with her bonds.

QUARITCH
I wouldn't do that. I just may be a dumb hick from Arkansas, but I do know somethin' about hogtying. Gets tighter, the more you strain. Especially around the neck.

Quaritch is not going to kill Neytiri outright. He wants the satisfaction of mano a mano. So they'll fight. Neytiri will get beat up some, and will be hurt, but will get away. And she'll give Quaritch some good lumps, too.

Okay, here's the rest of that scene. This is raw, first draft stuff. So be prepared to be underwhelmed. Comments/suggestions are welcome.

. . .NEYTIRI gives one last pull, and chokes a bit.

QUARTICH
Heh, heh. Told ya. You're the stubborn type. We'll fix that right up.

QUARITCH approaches NEYTIRI, knife at the ready. NEYTIRI's eyes widen. QUARITCH cuts off the gag.

NEYTIRI
Vrrtp! You will die!

NEYTIRI spits in QUARITCH's face.

QUARITCH
Now that was uncalled for, and just downright unfriendly. Aren't you glad to see I'm alive again--after you killed me?!

QUARITCH brings the knife close to NEYTIRI's face, then retreats to the opposite wall.

NEYTIRI
I would kill you again!

QUARITCH
(smiling)
You just might get that chance, little lady. Oh, excuse me. You're not a lady.

NEYTIRI
Vrrtp! You killed Grace!

QUARTICH
Oh? That's just too bad now, isn't it? Coulda killed you, outright. I have the right. One good killin' deserves another, right?

NEYTIRI
You speak words of vrrtp--

QUARITCH
There's that monkey word again. I don't much like it. I don't much like you. But I tell you what. Seeing as how you deserve to die, I'm going to be big about it and give you a chance to live, anyway.

NEYTIRI
Free me. You will die by my hand, Dreamwalker.

QUARITCH
(grinning)
Now I like that. Dreamwalker. More like a nightmare. Yours.

Without another word, QUARITCH drags NEYTIRI outside into a clearing. He hacks a long branch from a tree, removes the leaves and throws it next to NEYTIRI.

QUARITCH
Said I was going to give you a chance. A chance to kill me. But don't get any smart ideas. You run, I'll catch you and kill you on the spot.

QUARITCH gives NEYTIRI a vicious backhand slap, then cuts her bonds. NEYTIRI spits and gets to her feet. In seconds, the branch, now a staff, is in her hands.

QUARITCH
(grinning)
We gonna have us a party. You ain't got no bow and arrow this time, girly.

NEYTIRI strikes first with a stab to the head. QUARITCH is caught off-guard but turns slightly and only receives a glancing blow.

QUARITCH
Nearly caught me, girly-thing!

QUARITCH thrusts with the big knife. NEYTIRI parries, spins and lands a terrific blow to the back of QUARITCH's calf. He hobbles out of range. They circle each other cautiously, like two big, blue cats.

NEYTIRI makes a feint to the head with her staff. QUARITCH ducks under, grabs her neck. He pulls NETIRI close. They're motionless for a beat, then QUARITCH gives her a big kiss full on her mouth. He skips away, laughing, just as NEYTIRI tries to claw his face.

QUARITCH
Just wanted to see what it was like.

NEYTIRI spits at him, her ears lay flat.

QUARITCH
Whoa! Now I'm really scared.

For several minutes, they thrust, feint and parry. QUARITCH is clearly tiring of the game, but he can't seem to connect. NEYTIRI is much too agile. Suddenly, NEYTIRI lands a solid kick to QUARITCH's ribs. He's stunned but instinctively grabs for, and catches NEYTIRI's leg. He yanks hard. NEYTIRI hits the ground flat on her back. The wind's knocked out of her. QUARITCH puts calmly his foot across NEYTIRI's neck, pinning her.

QUARITCH
(bearing down)
This is where we coming to the parting of the ways, my little blue lady.

NEYTIRI struggles mightily, flipping about like a fish out of water. The pressure on her neck builds. QUARITCH towers over her, grinning. Suddenly, she screams and makes a desperate lunge for QUARITCH's foot. Startled, QUARITCH lets up on the pressure on NEYTIRI's neck a tiny bit for an instant. NEYTIRI's head darts forward. She sinks her insisors deeply into QUARTICH's instep. He howls and jumps backward as if burned by a branding iron.

NEYTIRI rushes him, landing blow after blow. QUARITCH drops his knife. He recovers, lands a haymaker on NEYTIRI's jaw, knocking her down. QUARITCH retrieves the knife. He's just about to bury it in NEYTIRI's chest, when there's a THRASHING of branches and leaves.

A thanator pads into the edge of the clearing. It bares its teeth and emits a low, gutteral growl. QUARITCH takes off, leaving NEYTIRI stunned on the ground.
The thanator advances to NEYTIRI, sniffing her and finally licking her face. It is the thanator she rode in the Great Battle against the RDA people.
