The Encounter
by Ta'em Tskxe

I am a branch, I am a tree.
The plants and animals around me ignore my existence.
I slink through the bush, a fresh trail on my nose, something strange, something sweet smelling, but nothing I've experienced before.
The tracks are small and unlike anything I have seen, almost unnatural. I trace one in the mud with my finger, two legs, not heavy, like a child, almost.

A twig snaps nearby, I react and leap up to a nearby branch, flattening myself against its rough bark and plentiful vines. Eywa hide me.

Soon, I see a small figure between the leaves, misshapen, miscoloured, and moving. This is not from Eywa, is it?

I silently follow the figure from above, running across the paths which Ewya provides her hunters. It seems to talk, mostly to itself. I think I managed to hear a few words from a language which is not of the people. I have spoken to many tribes, heard different ways of speaking, yet this is strange, this is, this is....not from here.

Enthralled I sat atop my perch and watched the figure below move through the thick plants which littered the ground. I snickered to myself as it became stuck to some of the glue plants, and silently mourned the loss of a small scorpion plant which seemed to cause the figure to become angry and lash out at the plant with all of its might.

I followed at a distance for what seemed to be a long time, watching its every move, studying it so that I could explain it to the Elders. It seemed much like a young Na'vi, pink not blue, and hopeless in the forest. Fear seemed to surround them, the smallest plant needed to be treated as if it were the largest Thanator. Their weapons were in small black sticks, which sounded like a storm on a rainy night. I thought to approach them initially but after witnessing their wrath on the plantlife, I had to think twice about it.

This creature was definitely not in touch with Eywa, it should not be here.

I dropped to the ground, convinced that I needed to end its life before it could cause any more destruction.
It moved into a thicker part of the trees, branches blocked my approach. However I knew this part of the forest, a small animal trail ran through there and exited not far from here, if I was quick I could beat them there, Eywa give me wings.

I arrived several moments before it, giving myself time to draw my bow and pray to Eywa that this was correct. The figure emerged from the branches, but it had changed, its colours changed, and it had lost its weapon.

This wasn't the same creature. It raised its hands and our eyes met, for the first time I saw life in these beings. Something which reminded me of the people.
Perhaps their society was much like our own. This lead me to believe that this one was not a hunter, and the one I had been following was. I chuckled at their hunters narrow vision and hearing. The 'non-hunter' walked slowly towards me with its hands above its head, what was it doing? Was it trying to look bigger to scare me?
I kept my bow aimed at its chest, but watched with interest at first (humour later) at how it moved and tripped over the tree roots and plantlife.
Definitely not a hunter. I smirked.

As it entered close enough range to talk, it stopped and lowered its arms. Placing a hand on its chest it spoke the words, "Helloo, ey am Toktor Hoohes." (At least thats as close as I can pronounce it.)

I smiled at this strange little creature, it was most definitely intelligent, and not a threat. Eywa may not see fit to shelter it however.

A loud clap sounded in my head, and a fizz sound passed my ear. I momentarily lost grip of the string, the arrow flew forward.

I saw the arrow embed itself through the funny little creature.

A tear rolled from its eyes, and a look of puzzlement filled its features as it fell towards the soft soil.

I looked to the exit of the animal trail, the hunter was exiting the thick trees, his stick held high. The next sound was much closer, but I was already moving. I ran through the underbrush as quick as my legs would carry me, and climbed the nearest tree to the hunters path.

I sat there with my back against the rough bark, breathing heavily and thinking about what had just happened. I had seen light in that creatures eyes. A faint connection with Eywa.

What would I do now? I could not go back to it. I had to tell someone, the Elders would know what to do...

Eywa help me to fly.
