Added two rigs last month:

(1) Dell Optiplex 790; Intel Core i5-2400 (3.10gHz); 8gb RAM; ATI Radeon HD 5450
(2) MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,5); Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4gHz); 4gb RAM; NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

I'm gonna go through my collection of computer parts and see if I can get a couple more boxes up.

I've got a new rig last weekend ;D

CPU: 2x AMD Opteron 2378 (8 cores @ 2.4 GHz)
RAM: 32 GB Kingston DDR2 800 ECC Registered
Mainboard: Tyan Thunder n3600b
PSU: BeQuiet 450W (probably I'm going to replace it with an 80+ Gold PSU for better efficiency)
OS: ESXi 5

Currently it runs ESXi 5 and one VM is purely dedicated to [email protected] (with Ubuntu Server 12.04 x64). It's not as strong as the Dual Xeon quadcore cluster nodes I had access to, but way better than any of my previous folding servers.

Nice, I need to get me a SSD. I run far too many gadgets and startup items. :P

Indeed. Even on my rather crappy Atom D510 the overall performance feels much better!

CPU Intel Core i7-3930K 3,[email protected],286GHz
GPU 2x AMD [email protected] CF
RAM 8x4GB
All-Water cooling

Using CPU power only, cause GPGPU do less compute power than CPU is capable to do it itself alone. It is strange. If GPU power is used, whole system generate less PPD then. There is something wrong with ATi/AMD GPU in [email protected] project.  So, I left my GPGPU and saving energy. PPD is between 6500 to 160000. Wonder its counting....I do not understand it. Client is set to receive large works.

Fah on AMD GPUs isn't as well optimized as it is for Nvidia GPUs. The v7 client should have improved things but they are still behind Nvidia's performance. And they don't support multi GPU setups either, so there will be just one GPU used for folding per client instance. With AMD cards the CPU load is quite high, if I remember correctly it's recommended to keep one core dedicated for the gpu stuff when doing SMP + GPU folding.

Yes, I had my client set up : one GPU = one dedicated CPU core correctly. GPU consumed full power of the CPU core and was able to generate 10k - 12k PPD per one GPU. These two GPUs were capable to make 20k - 24k PPD. But the rest of the CPU seemed stuck then. Without GPU my CPU was able to reach easily stable 60k PPD, (for example) but in time I engaged my GPUs into Folding, power of the rest CPU fallen down to 4k PPD, so I stopped playing with GPU at all. BTW, computing without GPU  saves me 500W per hour.

Resume: power bills in my country can easily and fast reach nasty levels I refuse accept + there are really bad results of AMD [email protected] GPUs in Folding project  +  it clearly ruins power of a beast CPU too.

With a good CPU it's better to skip folding on the GPU to avoid wasting CPU cycles, that's true.

I recently crossed over to the dark side and built a PC, I'm a long time Mac user for those who don't know.  The machine I put together has the following in it

CPU - Intel i7-3770K
Motheboard - Gigabyte Z77X-UP5TH
GPU - MSI GTX 670 PE
RAM - 32GB

I haven't overclocked anything yet.  Waiting till I get liquid cooling setup.  I just started FaH on it, and the estimated PPD is hovering around 35k, running 8 SMP threads + GPU.

I also occasionally fold with my mid 2010 Macbook Pro, don't do it very often though anymore.  I was getting around 1500 to 2000 PPD with that laptop.

I also have a couple servers I would be willing to install FaH on, however they are running FreeBSD, and I remember running into issues getting it to work the last time I tried it.

That's a nice machine you got there!

I haven't tried running FaH on freeBSD yet, therefore I can't provide you much help on this :-(

Here is my machine  :) :

CPU : Intel Core i7 2600K @ 3.40 GHZ (planned to be overclocked)
Motherboard : Asus Maximus IV Gene Z
GPU : MSI GeForce 8800 GTX (old but fast enough)
PSU : Fortron Aurum Gold 600W (+ 80 % rendering)
RAM : 7.7 Gio
HDD : Seagate Barracuda 3TB (selected in emergency due to previous 1TB disk brutal failure, and that one was sold by a friend at a just-out-of-factory price).

Those i7 have some pretty good folding performance, better than my 2x Opteron Quadcores! Well, they're older ;-)

Maybe you can upgrade to 2 six-core Opterons? (If your mainboard support them)

Nah, the board is too old and I don't know yet if it is fried too. But if I have to buy new stuff maybe ^^

We now have new machines at the computer school, running Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz. I can now fold at work as well (with 16 gigs of RAM, this is now feasable, in comparison to the old Core 2 vPros and 4gigs of RAM we had previously). :)

As I see, we are hitching up more i7s. Great!
Time is going forward, so I have retired the oldest piece from my folding horde, and the rest suffered some improvement ;):

AMD FX-60 is now out and is currently resting on my cabinet. The power consumption to performance ratio isn't good for keeping it running.

Intel i7-860 @ 3,4GHz, Radeon 5770
is still a part of the fleet, and his configuration remains the same.

Intel i7-2600K @ 4GHz, GeForce GTX 580 (codename "Whitebeast")
has been upgraded to most powerful single chip Fermi, with stock cooler and voltage. Performance (and power consumption) jumped up significantly, and I had to cut additional air intake to keep temperatures down.

Intel C2D-E8400 @ 3,6GHz, GeForce GTX 570 (codename "Eniac")
also received new GPU (it has been used already, but for this computer is new). I replaced the fans and pushed this monster to the egde with additional 50mVolts.
Eniac is currently sitting in the basement, equipped with remote control switch that reacts on signal from power distribution company and working at least 8 hours daily. Walking by the basement door, I can distinguish the chirping sound when he is idling (waiting for another WU or cooling down before shutdown), from continuous hum when he goes on full power.

Tsmuktengan looks at his Raspberry Pi...

He looks at the screen and sees Tanri's nantang machines...

Tsmuktegnan looks again at the Pi again but is no longer sure it can really help in folding compared to this.

Nice machines you have there.  :)
