I've been working on some personal projects lately, in my endeavour to learn Na'vi, and I happened to remember something that I think many of you would be interested in.

I know how much the Na'vi mean to some people here. Ke lu oeru kea "tirea aean," slä oe tslam. (Did I say that right? ???). And I happen to know of a place that the Eana Sirea here might find a home in:

This is Furcadia.

It is a "game." I call it a "game" in quotes, because it's really more of a graphical chat than a game. There are no enemies or "health" or any video-gamey things you would expect from the word "game." But it is very game-like, in that it gives you a character that you can name and customize, and a world you can explore and interact with.

Why I think some of you might like Furcadia:

  • It is a great place to socialize online, because not only can you chat with others, but you can sit next to them, follow them around, and do stuff together. It feels a little closer to real life.
  • It is free. You do not need to pay to join or explore or make cool stuff like your own maps. (It earns its income from extra, fancy perks that can be purchased.)
  • With the free character types available, you can create a character that's basically Na'vi. You can create and be your Na'vi self.
  • With the free tools, you can make your own maps for yourself and your friends. If we wanted, we could even establish an official LearnNa'vi Dream (the term used for maps), where everyone here could go to hang out with each other. It could be a forest like the one in the pictures above. If we have some artists, we could even create dreams that look like Pandora. For free.
  • It's easy to use. Moving around and doing stuff is simple, once you get the hang of it. Like I said, it's not an advanced game with complicated controls and stuff like that.
  • The program is lightweight. Older computers should be able to run it. (I used it on my own 10-year-old PC not that long ago.) And while it is only for Windows right now, they are currently working on an update to make it a browser app/webpage, so Mac, Chrome, and Linux users will be able to play it.
  • Furcadia has support staff if you need help, as well as forums. When you first enter the game, you will arrive in a tutorial area, and right away you will be contacted by a Welcomer: An official volunteer who you can talk to and ask questions. They are trained by Furcadia's staff and are very friendly.
  • You will never go to Pandora. But I believe you can find a little piece of it in here.

While it might look like a kid's game at first, Furcadia actually has a huge adult population, and even has a few official maps which exist specifically for adults. I've met people in their 30's, 40's and beyond.

I haven't spent much time in it for the last few years, but it's always had a special place in my heart. I can't promise I'll get on to join any of you, but if enough people are interested I might consider helping out, if I have time.

Give it a try. I don't think you'll regret it. :)
Let me know what you think!
