Is anyone else here following this game besides me?

It's looking to be a killer MMO (especially for FF fans) since they're attempting to fix some of the awful mistakes in XI and incorporate other new ideas.  But it also seems they're attempting to push the MMO genre forward with some of their concepts and approaches.

I have a feeling the game is going to appeal to more than just hardcore FF fans, but what's strange is there is no discussion about it on the non-FF the forums I frequent.  And it's still slated to release in 2010 (probably late 2010 if they stay on schedule), which is well prior to the Star Wars MMO.

It runs on Crystal Tools, the same engine under the hood for the XIII games.

when will they learn?

FF is not a MMO

FF is generally played for the story and MMO's are never able to have good concrete stories because if they put an end. Everybody reaches it and then stops playing
Only mostly AWOL.

I think they should've stuck to the basics, they didn't need to fix what wasn't broken. IMO they should start doing more like FFX again.

XI was broken in so many ways.  It did plenty right, but it did enough wrong in such a frustrating manner that it really limited its appeal.

As for the story, Lord of the Rings Online manages to have a great story through its epic quests.  They even manage to have their story arcs begin and end in a satisfying manner.  Sure each is tied in to each other, but you get the feeling that you've accomplished something and then you move on to the next arc (assuming you're doing them in order).  So yeah, it's entirely possible to have good stories in an MMO that begin and end while still having plenty of content.

And, if its designed right, I see no reason why people would stop playing a FF MMO just because they've completed the story aspect of it.  If people like the setting, the system, and the crafting/end game content/whatever, they'll keep playing.  That's the whole point of designing an MMO.  Being set in FF has nothing to do with that aspect of it.

i played XI for years and have been the MITHRA (catgirl) race.
also the new version, part 14, will contain all several races.

im really curious about the mithras and the ability to count their (fur)hairs  ;)
