Also, I'm no expert on this, but I checked Nintendos stocks around the time they announced the wii and it went up a fair amount. When the console actually released, it spiked a huge amount over the next year.

I, too, am curious about this Project Mocha Frappuccino :D The Wii ended up being a bit of a let-down with ancient graphics, no support even for dvd's and only 3 good games, so I hope this will be better. I'm a little skeptical to the controller though...

Even if the new console is substantially higher power than the 360/ps3, the extra time sony and microsoft are taking probably means Nintendo will have the weakest console again.

Just speculation obviously. If Microsoft and Sony spend 2 more years (the commonly accepted time frame) developing their consoles, they're likely to be more powerful. I can't wait to see the new console at E3. This is really gonna put pressure on Sony and Microsoft to unveil their consoles maybe next year.

Sony and Microsoft may also subsidize their consoles in the beginning, before the hardware prices fall. They doesn't make their money exclusively on selling consoles.

Nevertheless, it will become truly interesting to see Nintendo take the performance lead of the consoles. To be fair Nintendo make the best console games where it feels like Xbox and PS have been focusing way more than healthy on FPS games, which are many times better on a PC anyway.

What will be truly interesting is if the Wii suddenly becomes as insecure as the Wii. The Wii and the Origional Xbox was probably the two most insecure consoles in history, therefore the most modifiable. An example of good thing that have come from this is XBMC, Xbox Media Center.

DVD support was something I was surprised they didn't include. Good news was that homebrew added it. Aside from MarioKart, movies are now about all I use the thing for...

As for Nintendo's new console, I can't wait to see what they show off at E3...

I doubt it will be as powerful as what sony and microsoft reply with because Nintendo seem to have largly given up on having more power. I reckon they'll have something fancy but I don't know what they would do to draw customers. All they have is the Nintendo games now (which while most people I know love them I can't actually stand most of them) so I'm not optimistic personally.

Also I might have abandoned consoles for PC's due to the fact that imo they're just better.
Only mostly AWOL.

It looks like they're going for the "app" market. The controller for the new system seems to basically be an iPad based on the IGN article. Not sure it it has wi-fi connectivity though.

Yeah, but as it looks now they'll probably have the performance king and get the best looking games for up to 2 years before Sony or MS respond.

I actually doubt that leak seriously. At least the Wiimote made sense, but those controllers look like a console itself. Also imagine how expensive they would be.

It could very well be that the leak is dead wrong. But I've always found IGN's speculation to be at least semi based on fact, so I'll be surprised if their report isn't at least mostly accurate.

I agree.

Nintendo are selling the Wii on a gimmick to people who don't like normal games. I guess the new console will just be HD-capable. The wii is around equal to the PS2/xbox in graphics, so presumably the new one will just be equal to the PS3/360. That's the reason Nintendo went with the whole design of the Wii, because they knew they would not be able to compete on graphics, processing power or quality of normal games compared even to other consoles.
The wii annoys me though, games were being taken seriously as an art form the equal of films or whatever, and Nintendo go and lose them all that hard earned respect almost overnight :(

The Wii may have been targeting casual gamers, but it also brought in a whole new generation of gamers. A lot of these new gamers are going to want something more than just a gimmick for the new console. I don't expect the new console to be for hard core gamers only, but I'd be shocked if it's just a giant gimmick like the wii too.

Nintendo Whee!

No but seriously, there are a few good games to the Wii, the Mario games still have keep a high quality, bet there's also a serious load of BS games. Still, PS3 and Xbox almost exclusively focus om games that in many cases is released to PC, and is superior on the PC aswell.

I have a wii...agreed that there's a lot of junk games. Apart from the Mario stuff and a few other notables (a few Pokemon games and The Conduit come to mind), much of the available games (both disc and Wiiware) are shovelware...entertaining for a few hours, if at all. The virtual console games bring back memories though.

Today, I use my Wii almost exclusively for Mario Kart and watching Avatar. On occasion I play some old PC games using DOSBox (it's available as homebrew). Ever played Incredible Machine with a Wiimote?

Let's just hope whatever is coming next has decent content available for it.
