Is there a source for that? They better do at least this.

Not to single you out specifically, but I seem to be noticing this sort of mentality from a lot of gamers from the many sites that I visit. I don't understand how the gamers, who don't pay a monthly fee to play on PSN, can have this sense of entitlement. If it was like WoW or Xbox Live where you paid monthly to play, I would completely understand, but what Sony has been doing has been purely a free service that the gamers have had to contribute almost nothing.

They may not pay to play online (I'm on xbox, not playstation) but some people purchase their systems JUST to play online games. That's a lot of money to drop just to have the system go down for so long.

Many free services and things also have people react similarly.
across the board it seems if something is freely provided then some people WILL abuse it and feel entitled to have this free service for as long as they want and no one else is allowed to do anything about it. Heck think about LN.org if Payoang suddenly for whatever reason couldn't afford to keep it running or for whatever reason had to take it down would you start raging about him? Would you start insulting him?

Exactly. At the time I got my PS3, it was $400. Add together all the games I have that have online MP, multiply it by $60, that roughly comes out to a total of apx $760 (might have forgot a game or two). This not including at least $100 worth of DLC for those games as well. I didn't pay that much of my own money which took around a year and a half of odd jobs around the house to get, just to have it all go down.

Playstation Network isn't really free. You still have to buy the console and a game. It's kind of like when a store has a "buy one get one free" sale but you can still buy one at half price. Your not really getting the second one free. The store just tricked you into buying their product. That second product you got? You still technically paid for it, just half as much as you normally would have. So not free.

Or when a sub shop offers "free" condiments. You had to buy the sub didn't you? Free to me means absolutely no commitment on your part. With Playstation, you definitely have to spend a lot of money to take advantage of this apparently "free" service.

Lol. Awesome pic  ;D

Also, I'd like to add that I'm not knocking Playstation Network. I think it's awesome that they don't charge extra to play online.

Your not really getting the second one free. The store just tricked you into buying their product. That second product you got? Or when a sub shop offers "free" condiments. You had to buy the sub didn't you? Free to me means absolutely no commitment on your part. With Playstation, you definitely have to spend a lot of money to take advantage of this apparently "free" service.

But that's assuming that the multi player was an original selling point of the system, which  it wasn't. The original selling point of the PS3 was Blu-Ray, superior hardware, and its selection of game. The PSN came as a service to their customers. Kinda like a moment of, hey, thanks for buying our stuff, here's this you can have fun with.

Your analogies you use don't really apply here as the purchasing of the prior item, in both your analogies, does not make the second dependent. The free condiments are there as a service by the restaurant, nothing more. They do not HAVE to have the condiments to sell you the sub. You'd still buy the sub without the condiments if you wanted to sub anyways. Same thing goes with the PS3, it was not intended for multi player. You, as the consumer, may be purchasing said item because of the addons, but the seller is not obligated to maintain those addons if that was not a main point of their selling said items to you, or even any point. I got my PS3 because it was a PlayStation and a Blu-ray/backwards compatible all in one. Exactly what they advertised it was for.

Now, it may have grown to be as such, but that's only because the market has dictated it. Much like the condiments in the store, the only reason why they are there is because the consumer has dictated it. They feel entitled to it because they purchased the main item, for which if it was not there, the second item would have no purpose. You can have the play station and the game without the PSN, but you can't have the PSN without the station and games.

It's like Xbox live also, you don't have to play Xbox live. For some games it may be a selling point of their game, but you don't have to have Xbox live to play any game that the Xbox offers. Thus is as such with the PS3 also. You can't say that buying the DLC's entitles you to having the free service of PSN. The DLC's are only exploitation of the current situation, that being PSN is free. Which I might add that PSN will not be free for much longer. Sony can no sustain the cost it takes to keep PSN running without some sort of return. The discussion has been happening for a while within Sony, and after this recent event, I would suspect that this would even cause more reason for it to turn to P2P system. It's not the first time Sony would do this in their history.

It really goes to show the thought process of the people as to what position they take.

If the PSN becomes P2P, they'd lose 80% of their already diminished fans.
I'd stop using it, for one.

That's why they have PSN+ and all the stuff in the store. I have some 100 friends and 80% have PSN+.

And it really has no effect on this situation whether MP was a selling point or not, I bought it for that (and everything else). That's what counts. Just as well, I have 2 games that don't have singleplayer (socom and warhawk) and you can't play them unless you're on PSN.

In any case, 77million peoples' sensitive info was potentially obtained by these hackers, and that alone should mean a load of compensation.

The PSN being shut down majorly hampers the PS3's functionality for most people who bought it. It's as simple as this:

If I buy something, and continue to put money into it in any way shape or form, I expect it to function. If it does not, I expect it to be made up in some way, so I don't feel like my money is wasted.

I'll agree that my analogies aren't the strongest. I was kinda hoping the two analogies would sort of blend together to make my point, not sure it worked though. Anyways, we'll have to agree to disagree about PSN not being a major selling point. I have many friends who purchased their consoles only because of the multiplayer games available. And then theirs all the little arcade style games only available of the network. They did strongly advertize for PSN too. The ads claim that "It only does everything". Don't you think that includes PSN?

Also, I don't think anything beyond an apology from Sony is actually owed to the gamers. The free stuff they're offering is just an awesome bonus in my book.

I hope I don't come off as argumentative. I'm not disagreeing for the sake of argument. I just... disagree.
