What do you all think about this? I don't know all the details but it sounds to me like a group of hackers are coming to the aid of a fellow hacker being attacked by Sony. I've read bits and pieces about the issue Sony has had with this hacker and I really feel that there are major holes in the story.

This could be the "anti corporation conspiracy theorist" in me speaking but it seems to me that Sony is hiding something and the mentioned hacker isn't as bad as he's being made out to be. If that IS the case, then this group of hackers have my support 100%.

What am I missing?!?

Here's the link BTW:

Also just a heads up, hacking is illegal in the US so if the American Chapter of Sony is perusing this person by legal means then the fellow hackers have no grounds in which to do this, and in fact they can be perused as well.  I don't know anti-hacking laws in other countries but I would have to imagine they are similar.

If you are going to hack the USA, do it from a country that does not have an extradition treaty, or do it in a way that doesn't tie you to a physical location close to home.  Anyhow, I saw this coming years ago.

First I want to reiterate that I definitely don't know both sides of the story so my opinion here is based almost entirely on guessing. That being said, just because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong. Take marijuana in the US for an example. It's flat out illegal, but alcohol isn't. The way I see it, there's nothing at all wrong with smoking pot... so long as you don't go operate machinery that could injure somebody else. If you want to risk harm to yourself in a way that has no chance of hurting others, please by all means do so.

While what these hackers are doing IS illegal (and for all I know they are indeed just lousy pirates) and is preventing people from using a product in the way they want to, it's not actually hurting anyone. Heck, it could actually be helping some people break their addiction to video games, though that certainly isn't one of the reasons I currently support the hackers.

If good evidence shows up that shows that what they are doing is just stealing and breaking stuff just because they can, then they deserve what they've got coming. But my instincts tell me otherwise... and my instincts could be completely wrong.

I read the thing and I agree with one of the comments, I don't want to agree with the hackers and I don't want to agree with Sony. I just want to play some games and not get caught up in a hacker war.

Oh, its Anonymous, yeah I've seen their work before. Usually they just hack for pranks so this ones different, TBH the only part I don't get about all of this is why did they do this when Sony and "the hacker" were reaching a settlement? This is only going to draw out the process even longer, and Sony is going to be more pissed. Anyway, I'm going to try and stay out of this one as much as I can so this will probably be my last post on the subject.

I don't really care but I think this ruins some fun for people ( like me ), who don't care if their are mods or not but that just want to play games. Now I haven't been able to chat and/or play some games with ppl from my friendslist, since I can't log in.

This is just like school, the annoying kids gotta ruin it for the others. Just like a lot of other things in the world, like ppl just screaming for attention.

Question: Is it the hackers who took down PSN or is it Sony?

I honestly think that if they really want to mod games just buy them on PC. So much simpler.

Consoles are for people who can't be arsed to faff around with the game and just want to play it.
I know that's why everyone I know gets a game on a console.
Only mostly AWOL.

It's getting pretty frustrating. I've had a four day weekend plus all last week I couldn't play Socom. I'm not sure where to side here, I just want it running again so I can play my damn games.

Emtokay

Don't side with anyone. I say, just play offline games and wait for it to be fixed.

It was Anon. They were DDoSing PSN and other Sony places because of the lawsuit against Geohot.

inb4 console wars.

I say, sony needs to disable access to the store and reset all credit card info. enable the network for only gaming, while they fix the crap that Anon (a.k.a. the f*ckers over on 4chan) pulled, instead of being jerks and shutting the entire thing off while they think of ways to make it more secure and take too long to implement them. They'd end up with a lot less pissed off customers who spent $400 for their machine who can't use their network to even watch movies on netflix, let alone for gaming. It's not just the hackers that are in the wrong here, it's also sony.

Sony shut it down because the hackers got in and started fsu. the shutdown wasnt directly caused by the hackers.

Cause it's 4chan.
Not really.
Anonymous isn't what most people think it is.
Anonymous is really just a bunch of people fighting for freedom, using the internet as a weapon in the fight.
