I suspect folks may have already seen this, but for those who haven't...

Avatar on Blu-ray 3D

Ok, I don't have a 3D TV....yet, but I'll probably get it anyway...You know, for when I do get a 3D TV!

I saw it, and even though I was watching it on my notebook which is a world away from 3D, it looked better than when I watched the regular version. I'll get it as long as it has the same "extra 16 or something minutes" that are included in the Collector's Edition. THOSE are the scenes, without which, the movie leaves a LOT of questions.

I hope it has them, but 3D is 3D either way... Now I might actually look into getting a 3D monitor for this.

As someone who has a 3D computer monitor and has seen the Avatar 3D film on it I can say then it's just as good (if not about 3% better) than the theater version. Definitely worth getting if you have the money. I prefer the PC route as you then have options for 3D video games, 3D pictures (Mars rover pictures!), and other good things.

As I understand it they are releasing only the orignal version of the film in 3D "not" the extended version in 3D I was hoping they would realese the extended edition as I understand this is the same film as released on the panasonic exclusive release.

Some are dressed (face painting, tail or full dressing) celebrates the Avatar 3D blu-ray version to be released? If so, how you plan to (at home, with friends or even publicly)?

As far as I have been able to tell, the 3d Bluray versions are still cropped down from the original movie format which was likely 4k resolution given they were using CineAlta camera systems.  :(

As far as I know the Cinema verson of Avatar is a 2K film not 4k (Avatar 2 will be true 4K with at least 48 FPS)

DJ Makto

You are right, the theaters showed the movie in 2k resolution, but the camera systems were used were capable of shooting in 4k. Either-way the Blu-ray version is still cropped down to fit home HD systems.

Off the top of my head, it was announced that Avatar would be shot in 60 fps.

Well, 48 is more likely, because 1. it is 2x the current film speed - old style film projectors would be easy to convert, 2. 60 fps would scale badly to the PAL refresh rate of 50 fps, and on DVD PAL is just way better than NTSC.

Yep there are certain advantages to shooting in 48 fps. But most of the recent news still seems to point towards James Cameron shooting in 60 fps. Combine that with the less than stellar talk that about the 10 minutes or preview footage for the Hobbit that was shot in 48 fps on RED Epics. Granted its all speculation at this point till more concrete info is released.

From the 60 fps RED camera system test footage I got to see at NAB 2012, 60 fps is mind blowing. I wholeheartedly look forward to what James Cameron does with his RED Epic cameras. Regardless of the fps count.

I work with digital cinema projectors  ;D

Just as an FYI for everyone here, this 48 and 60fps is a great upgrade, but when you talk 3D there is currently no way for movie theatres (as of right now) to play back DCI 3D content at true 48fps (in as each individual eye seeing 48 true individual frames per second).  We purposely increase the refresh rate to 144hz for RealD but that's just to reduce flicker.  As of right now, when you watch a 3D movie in RealD 3D you are watching 2K 48fps, but it's played back as 24fps for each eye.  The DCI spec is currently being proposed for an upgrade to allow for faster frames rates in 3D, and for 3D to even run at 4K.  But until that happens all you will see in RealD 3D is 2K @ 24+24fps.  I know they want to double the available video bandwidth to 500mbps from the current maximum of 250mbps.  Increasing frame rate means increasing the bandwidth required if you want to maintain the same level of quality.  The upgrade if/when it is approved could prompt for hardware upgrades too which could slow adoption.  But given how fast the industry converted to digital from 35mm, it wouldn't surprise me if they would upgrade this quickly.

I remember Jim saying that he wanted to film Avatar 2 in 48fps, which should imply that he wants to make use of the proposed 96fps 3D frame rate I assume.

Anyway I don't really think 60/48 fps is that much worth hype. 24 fps is sufficient to contain enough motion data for well-designed motion interpolation algorithms to upscale it to 60/48 fps and create minimal artifacts. I've made a few Avisynth scripts to do just that, and although the processing is super slow (at 2K size, around 5 frames per second), the results are great and actually look like they were shot at 60 fps (though the motion blur is a bit excessive, since they come from a 24 fps shutter rate). I think I can process a free movie (big buck bunny comes to mind) and upload it somewhere someday.

This will never take off in cinema though.  If a director wants to show an audience a 48fps movie, they will use proper movie cameras.  I have actually experimented with frame interpolation on Avatar and yes, I agree that it does add a much "smoother" feel to the movie but it still looks laughably artificial.  I know someone with a real 60fps movie camera and it's just night and day when I compare real 60fps content with artificial 60fps content created from 24fps.  At that point I would just watch it at it's native frame rate.  Remember, if you don't expose the camera's image sensor at a certain time, you can never completely recreate what we think was really there at the time.

Irtaviš Ačankif

Also, what will they use to distribute a 48fps movie on DVD and BluRay? Interlacing? It'll work I suppose, but when I think of it it sounds so funny and ancient :)

I won't waste my money on the 3D disc. First of all, it is the shorter version which I will NOT waste my time on, secondly, I am NOT going to spend DOUBLE the money on a 3D television, when I get more consistent bang for the buck, with the 39 inch true flat screen Emerson, that looks SOOO great, no mater WHAT is on, Disc, Broadcast, or Computer Flight Sim X, (it understands the computer WITHOUT translator boxes, you ought to see what JPEG looks like on it).
