Which deleted (and finished) scenes you think are missing in the film. Which of them do you think are important ?

Opening Earth scene
Short Sturmbeest scene
School visit.
Neytiri flies.
Sturmbeest hunt.
Jake and Neytiri's love scene.
Destroying of dozers.
,,Discovering" destroyed dozers.
Sturmbeest attack.
Quaritch vs Neytiri(with Thanator)
Grace explains school incident.
Jake ends Tsu'tey's life.

Rotobull cz

It's not all of deleted scenes. I chose just several of finished scenes. Some of them are missing. :)
If you like some scene, which isn't there or more than two scenes from there, post it here. ;)

This is not an easy question because James Cameron has brilliantly made the film such that each and every scene has you learn more and more about the Na'vi people, culture and way of life.  IMO that the primary reasons for so many valuable scenes being cut are as follows:  One, that there is an optimum time length that the film industry expects.  This is for scheduling and an "average" viewers ability to sit for a period of time.  Plus, how many times can they show a film in one day to maximize their profits.  (yet RDA reasoning again...)  Two, that the film has to pass ratings critics.  In the United States, the original theatrical version had a PG-13 rating.  If the sturmbeest hunt and/or Tsu'tey's death had been presented, it would have gone to an R rating.  Thus reducing the number of potential viewers and customers.  I'm only guessing, but I could see JC purposely choosing to present the core of the story to reach younger audiences with the hope to encourage environmental awareness and life choices.

As to what I think is also missing...

The Dream Hunt.  From my (limited) knowledge, a vision quest (searching for your spirit animal, your spiritual future...) is a part of every native culture that I've learned and read about.  Achieved either by severe fasting, elemental exposure, sleep depravation, and/or taking hallucinogens.  It is in this scene (see script) that Jake discovers/learns that he and the toruk are connected and are one.  Eywa reveals to him the coming destruction of the land and burning of the forest.  Without this, Jake's decision to go after the toruk to get back in with the clan, is otherwise weak.  True, he knows of the legend.  But having this knowledge of his connection, and experiencing the fall of Hometree, is a clear, logical step in the building/continuing of the plot.  Unfortunately, this too would have made the theatrical film version an "R" rating.

(Scene was attempted in rough form but never was continued to a finished production.  It's viewable on the Extended and Blu-Ray dvd set in the extra's disc.  I admit it didn't fit the flow or style of the rest of the film.  Probably why it was dropped so early in the production.)

Yes. I heard about ,,The dream hunt" too. Indians was doing it.
And a lot of native culturies.
I really like Earth opening scene, because it explains some things.
Tsu'tey's full death is very important and explanation of the school incident is important too, because Na'vi didn't break relationships with Skypeople for no reasons.

The most important scene - a scene where scientists arrested administration. A film about filming "Avatar" includes episode of the shooting of this scene. This scene seemed very important when shooting and is very strange that it was not included in the movie.

Rotobull cz

Avatar could be very long, if they put there all scenes. I think, that destroying of dozers is important too, because it's ,,reason" of start of the war. As I said school explanation is missing there, because Na'vi isn't so unfriendly to break relationships with Skypeople for no reasons. Or I like Sturmbeest hunt.

My favorite scene? Trudy taking out the RDA in the Elevator the moment that the door opens. Second favorite, Max giving the RDA Pukes the finger from the Mining Suit that he commandeered and the Control Room fight that followed. Third favorite was the Dance scene with the KILLER music that was playing. I already figured that Tsu'tey was dead from the multiple point blank machine gun wounds BEFORE he fell to Pandora.

as there's more version of Avatar, I'm not sure which of them contains/does not contain which deleted scenes. Even there are two very complete versions, which contain all scenes, including unfinished. One of them was created by xellos and can be downloaded here on forum (I can find link, if you are interested. It is divided into five subparts because of possibility to replay them on some older hardware), second one was compiled by 'eveng te Atan and one could see it on Avatar meeting in Berlin this year's May. It's worth to see one of these versions as many thing are clear now.
it's hard to decide what missing scene is missing more, but if I'd have not only one choice, then probably Tsu'tey's death, school visit and Grace's explanation what happened in the school

I'm going to be controversial here, and I know I've said this before, but I wish Tsu'tey had survived.

If Avatar was a stand alone movie, with no sequel you don't have to deal with the issue that Jake, a Na'vi for less than a week, is now chief.
However, I hear Avatar did quite well at the box office, and a sequel is on the horizon.
How much interesting tension and story enriching potential rivalry will be lost? :'( >:(

But, have no doubt, fanfic can overcome all obstacles.  ;) ;D

Meanwhile I would have liked to have seen Parker order the Avatar program closed, it would make sense of the scene where they're packing.

And maybe a scene to explain why Grace is surprised to get Jake not Tommy?  ;)  :P

school visit and Grace's explanation what happened in the school

I have to admit these two scenes together do add more of the small back story of the continuing conflict between the Na'vi and the RDA Security Forces.  It's also not very obvious, but seeing the bullet holes in the wall at the school with Grace's explanation (confirmation) that the "troopers" came in firing upon the Na'vi... but this also ties in with Grace's comment after being shot by Quarritch as they flee Hell's Gate after breaking out of confinement.

"Damn....  Not again..."

Unless I misinterpreted the line, it seems that Grace was shot as she tried to protect the Na'vi children to escape the school...

QuoteAll these scenes are in the extended collector's cut.

Yes, but not all were in the edited film.  Some were on the 3rd/extras dvd at least for US versions.
(Scenes like the Dream Hunt never made it past rough filming.  Nor was the Sturmbeest Hunt Dance/Festival with Jake and Neytiri showing fondness for each other.)

Kamean

It is a pity that Dream Hunt didn't complete... :(

I believe her line was "Oh crap!" (to herself)
followed by
"This is going to ruin my whole day." (to Jake)

Irayo for the script ma Taronyu Leleioae.  :)
There are small scenes, where you can see, how Neytiri and Jake's love is growing up.
When I saw it first, I didn't understand, how quickly Jake and Neytiri fell in love.
I'm reading it now and there are very interesting things. :)

Tìtstewan

If I remember me correct, there are 28 'deleted' scenes, also there is a member (Yaknun) on this forum, who has his own website with some scenes and a poll.

How about some before and after pics of Hiroshima?

Maybe some pictures of Vietnamese child victims of napalm and agent orange birth defects?

I'd have to go check the film to see what Grace actually said in the finished film, but from the script...

Quote
GRACE
                    Aaahh, crap. Not again.

He looks over at Grace and freezes. She is looking down at a
BLOODY HAND. She clutches her abdomen, covering the
spreading stain. Looks at Jake, wide-eyed.

                              GRACE
This is gonna ruin my whole day.

                              JAKE
                    Hang on, Grace.

My interpretation is that Grace likely had been shot in the school building trying to protect the children...

I did check the movie, it's just about permanently in my DVD drive.
No "Not again" in the version I have, but I do feel it belongs there.

Yes, it's not important, which photo you could use.
Every war is crazy and terrible. :(
Napalm is great example, how we all love Nature and each other.

Interesting find - I'll try to check movie too this weekend. I didn't notice this comment before, it always surprises me that new moments can be found in the film.
According script - I have printed it for a looong time, but still didn't read it whole, what a shame.....
