Human No More

Internet petitions don't work.

You'd be surprised though - JC WILL know about the communities that have arisen. He knows very well how much some people care about the language, as they should. It's been in news a lot.

I think he'd take more care next time to show his respect to the language learners. Perhaps he didn't take as much in the movie because there weren't communities like this who cared about the correctness of the language until after the movie was released.

Groundbreaking begins in 2013, with completion about three years later

Moviegoers pining for a return to the lush moon of Pandora in James Cameron's "Avatar" will finally get their chance — first-hand.
Walt Disney, teaming with the Oscar-winning director and Fox Filmed Entertainment, will begin building in 2013 a section at its Orlando theme park that will mimic the thriving green landscape depicted in the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Under their agreement, Disney — which typically sticks to its own franchises and properties in designing rides — won exclusive global theme park rights to the Avatar franchise. It will eventually take Avatar "lands" beyond Orlando's Disney World...

$400m Avatar 'world' coming to Disney World

Here's an update on the Avatar theme park attraction:
As we previously reported, James Cameron's Avatar has inspired a series of Disney amusement park adventures that should be ready in time for Avatar 2's release in 2014.

Now Cameron has spoken to the L.A. Times about Disney's upcoming plans for the rides, which are still obviously in the early stages.

However, Cameron confirmed he wants to do a flight attraction of some kind, "[as] flying is a big part of the movie."

"One of the things people liked the most at test screenings was going up into the floating mountains in the flying sequences," he noted.

Cameron has also said there may be creatures incorporated into the attractions that we won't see until the second and third movies. He added, "As long as it's thematically consistent, as long as it looks and feels and smells the way you imagine it, then we've succeeded."

The Times also reports that construction will begin in 2013, but the attractions are slated to open in 2016, when both Avatar 2 and 3 will already be in theaters in 2014 and '15 respectively. We also just reported on TG that there's a Star Trek theme park ride in the works to open in Jordan in 2014, so you'll be able to make the trek there at least two years before the Avatar rides are ready.

Of course none of this is going to be cheap, that's never really been a word in Cameron's vocabulary, and Deadline speculates the construction and licensing costs on this could cost "about $400 million," which could have been what Avatar itself cost to make.

Although no one's saying for certain, there have been some crazy estimates that put it at $500 million, while others name a $300 million range. Jay Rasulo, CFO of Disney's parks operations, was just quoted on Deadline as saying the Avatar arrangement is "a stand licensing deal" that won't give Cameron a percentage of the ticket sales, like Spielberg's deal with Universal, but they will be sharing the merchandising spoils.

You would think there's still a lot of money that can be made from theme park rides, a knowledgable source told me there was a point in the '70's when the Universal Studios Tour was making more money than the company's movies, and like most things Cameron, I'm willing to bet this should rake in some big money, especially with the trilogy completing by mid-decade.

As work continues to bring the epic fantasy world of AVATAR to life at Disney Parks, filmmaker James Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment producing partner Jon Landau explored Disney's Animal Kingdom yesterday with Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, and Imagineer Joe Rohde.

"Getting the chance to roll up my sleeves and explore Disney's Animal Kingdom from the inside out was a phenomenal experience," said James Cameron. "As I walked through the park, I kept imagining Pandora coming to life all around me and found my mind racing with all the possibilities of what we will be able to create in the years ahead. Disney's Animal Kingdom is truly a remarkable place and I can't think of a better home for our first AVATAR experience."

Cameron and Landau are touring the Walt Disney World Resort this week as part of the creative partnership announced in September between Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Fox Filmed Entertainment and Lightstorm Entertainment. Construction of the first AVATAR-themed land is expected to begin at Disney's Animal Kingdom by 2013.

"We do a significant amount of work at the beginning of our projects to ensure that the final experience has the attention to detail, theme and uniqueness for which Disney is known," said Tom Staggs. "Today's visit is an important step in the creative process and we are excited about getting started on what will be a spectacular addition to Disney's Animal Kingdom."

Along with their team at Lightstorm Entertainment, Cameron and Landau are serving as creative consultants on the project, working side-by-side with Imagineers to dream up groundbreaking experiences that will take guests deep into the worlds of AVATAR like never imagined.
"AVATAR and Disney's Animal Kingdom share a common bond in that they both focus on adventures that will radically change your perspective. They call you to take action on behalf of nature wherever it may be found," said Joe Rohde, who led the creative team that designed the park. "This is a rare opportunity to collaborate with Jim, who has an incredible eye for detail and a passion for doing things that haven't been done before."

Did I read somewhere that, to an avatar's nose, Pandora's air smells like cinnamon?

That doesn't really make any sense, ma Archaic. Avatars have different noses than ours, so their sense of smell would not be comparable to that of humans - though they are all chemical detectors, the way they are wired with the brain could be totally different. For example, could I say, "To litmus paper, lemon juice tastes sweet"?

However, maybe the smell an Avatar gets from cinnamon is the same as the smell an Avatar gets from Pandora's air? i.e. Cinnamon smells the same as air to an Avatar, but not Cinnamon to humans = air to avatars

Which would make it moot, since presumably constantly smelling something will dull out the smell receptors of an organism, not to mention that it would be a survival disadvantage to smell odor in normal air and have an Avatar look around for the non-existant cinnamon cookies. This means that Avatars would not be able to smell cinnamon either...
