I've read in more than a few places that Cameron wouldn't have made Avatar as an animated movie, I wonder how he'd feel about that now.
Hiccup and Toothless showed what you could do with animation in 2010, just three months eight days after Avatar opened, I wonder how much earlier Avatar started.

EDIT: Around three years, Avatar was got the green light 2006, HtTYD was going no place fast - so in 2009 a new director essentially started over.

I think 'Avatar' would have lost much of its impact if it were animated. Obvious animation suspends reality in a particular way that would have diluted the message, no matter how good it was.

Mostly no - it was the technology that made Pandora seem real, and animation just doesn't do the same things. Then there's the (mostly western) issue of animation not being considered a serious medium but 'for children'.
