"How fast do you think an ikran can fly?"  :-\
This question emerged from my mind a few minutes ago. Can you guess it?
And then you/we may discuss any questions about the animals and plants of Pandora...

The banshee is highly maneuverable and can dive at speeds close to 140 knots. ( 260 km/h or 161,6 mph ) :)

But horizontally it's much slower, kefyak? So, how long would it take me to cover a 300 km long distance on ikran-back?

On wikia I don't found horizontal speed. But if we start from the relation of horizontal ( ~700 - 720 ) and diving speed ( ~790 - 800 ) of WW II fighter's, it would be approximately 220 - 230 km/h.

I have no idea; my mind won't do speed and distance word problems anymore. :(  But I assume that if you didn't want your ikran to arrive all tired out that you would fly fast for a short while, and then fly slow, and then vary the wing-stroke again...  like spelling a horse with different gaits? ???

Human No More

Maximum speed is probably faster than a speed one can comfortably average for a long journey, but that sounds reasonable.

Mllte.
Avatarwikia are no ultimate truth. Details have changed more than once. For example, have removed the mention of cutting the braids for the crimes. Maybe the speed will increase. At least in the movie it sometimes seemed more than twice.

I would also be interested in how long an ikran lives...  :-\  Long enough to serve a hunter for all his/her life? Why is that no elderly people (Eytukan or Mo'at, for instance) can be seen riding an ikran in the film?

Agree.
Why no elderly riders? Maybe simply not have enough time to show everything. Movie - is not a book. In the meantime it is hoped that Cameron quickly wrote his book.

One would also have to take into account the age of the ikran when the hunter bonds with them. However, I thinkthat your assumption would be correct, otherwise I'm not sure that the Na'vi would take the dangerous journey to bond with one. It seems like they would only want to do that once, and certainly not as an elder.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Wow, that's pretty fast! :)

I also think we might have seen Eytukan or Mo'at ride an ikran if the film had been longer. :) Though, maybe it would be possible that they have no ikran anymore. :o I'm not sure, but can a Na'vi actually choose a new ikran when the first (Seze for Neytiri, for instance) dies - or is there no possibility for them to bond a second time?

Lora Syulang

I think that one can bond with an ikran after the last one dies. It is the ikran that can only bond once not the hunter right? As far as the flying thing goes, not tiring it out before you reach your destination and all, sometimes they can rest the wings on an up draft. Many birds that migrate rest in flight doing just that.

True! I had forgotten about that sentence, but it says it. :) I think it actually makes sense, because otherwise the hunter could not hunt from the sky after his ikran's death, and that would be non logical and bad - especially if the ikran dies very early.

Here is an article about the plants on Avatar:

QuoteAlthough they're not nominated for an Academy Award, plants play a central role in the blockbuster movie "Avatar." A botanist provided the science behind how these unusual organisms may have evolved.
