Glowing roads, Pandora comes to Earth
« on: November 15, 2014, 01:58:18 pm »
You may heard about project of intelligent roads, powered by build-in solar cells, can glow in darkness and display some informations.
You may also heard about first prototype, bicycle road equipment only with solar cells, to test performance.
Yesterday i found another idea, electric-less glowing road.

Daan Roosegaarde from Netherland, can't wait to finish solar technology tests and try different way. This time phosphorescence. This technology need solar energy and can't infinity illuminating like LED technology. Apart of that, technology was good enougth to implement it into roads and sidewalks all over the world.

Full gallery here: https://forum.learnnavi.org/gallery/?su=user;cat=333;u=6874

IMO, result was really Pandorian climate :P , missing only light moderation while interacts with move and pressure of peoples.
What is Your opinion about it?

Reminds me of how some people use glow-in-the-dark paint on rocks in their gardens.

I had glowing powder, that's not so expensive toy.
I want test and report how it work before new year, but always don't have enough free time to deal with 10h epoxy glue or more with oil paint.

If anyone is interested: this seems to be the exact location of the cycle path :) Perhaps I'll visit it some time in the next weeks/months... :)

There have been a number of proposals now for placing solar cells in road beds to provide power for the grid. The inventors are looking at the surface area used by roads and thinking that this are can be made more 'green'. While a noble idea, it is doomed to fail. Roads made of concrete and macadam don't hold up with time. How would you expect a road made of glass and silicon to fare? Putting solar cels on the shoulders and medians of roads would make far more sense, be much less expensive, ad much easier to maintain.

OTOH, for the purpose of marking the road, embedding phosfluorescent materials in a road makes a lot more sense. Unlike photovoltaic cells, phosflourescent materials can be installed in such a way as to be nearly indestuctible. They emit a soft light suitable for nighttime walkers/bikers, that will have less effect on night vision. This would be less useful on roads for automobiles, as they have headlights that are much better for high speed nighttime travel.

The biggest challenge will be coming up with phosflourescent materials that do not break down with time. Because these materials have to store energy in a long-term metastable state, they are somewhat fragile chemically. A year or two is not a real big problem now, but a decade is. These materials are also less efficient when they are cold.

This is awesome they should use this rather than the green paint they have here for better night vision.

Very interesting. I wonder what phosflourescent material they are using. The common green you see is usually strontium aluminate. Other colors are often done with rare earth phosphors, which are relatively expensive. They also tend to work better.
