Does anyone have any pet peeves regarding Avatar and the Na'vi?

I do! >:(

I really hate it when people say the Na'vi are giant smurfs.

That joke wasn't funny the first time, and it hasn't gotten any better since!

GEEZ! Skxawngs!

Muzer

The fact that they removed most of the depth from the plot so people say it's very shallow.

The fact that they don't explain, or at least laugh at, the word unobtanium, so everyone takes the piss out of that.

Omaticaya/Toruk Macto (from the subtitles)

Well, those are about the film itself, which there is already a subforum for, so don't mind me :P
[21:42:56] <@Muzer> Apple products used to be good, if expensive
[21:42:59] <@Muzer> now they are just expensive

People who don't just refuse to learn Na'vi, but any other language other than English. And so-called "Christians" who would force everyone to go to their church if they could, and lecture you for three hours if you don't believe everything they say.

And when someone used the microwave and didn't clear the screen. I don't care if there's only three seconds left, it flashes and distracts me! Grr!

When someone says that learning navi is completely useless, because this language does not exist, it really makes  me pissed off. I always answer : this LANGUAGE DOES EXIST, AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE LEARNING IT!

i hear you on that one.  and to add on to that.  when "christians" call you unpatriotic if you're part of a different faith (that's actually happened to me in school).  i say "one nation under the Gods" when we recited the pledge and because i didn't say "under God" i was automaticially unAmerican.  technically speaking even those saying "under God" aren't saying it "correctly" either since originally it was "One Nation indivisible" till the Knights of Columbus came around and changed it.
and ppl who refuse to learn another language cause it's unAmerican...wtf?  i'm i've been learning Spanish, latin, Chinese, and Na'vi for five years (not at the same time) and i'm still a patriot.

The fact that people don't look beyond the somewhat composite screenplay.

...and the fact that some runtime just had to be cut out :(

Sran.  I never imagined the incorrect spelling "Macto" to be spelled with a c until I saw it here, and besides, the ASG and Pandorapedia have it even worse.  However, I do remember initially mishearing "toruk," thinking it might be spelled "tarook," and I initially took "Oorah" from the script (heard in the movie) to be spelled as "Ourah" (and is even better realized as Ura).

I'm at least glad "Iknimaya" could be spelled well....

A language is only as alive as the people who speak it. And the last time I checked, I was living and breathing quite well! So, HA HA all over the people who say it's not a real language. Well, more of a "working" language...it works.

Lorey

I have to admit that the first time I saw Avatar in theaters, I thought the graphics were really good but the story was meh and didn't understand the hype of it.

And then I watched it again a bit ago and fell in love with it. I don't even know how it happened but I google'd all about it and found this place and am on my way to learning Na'vi. Although I'll have to admit I'm not sure how I'd tell anyone I'm learning a language that was made for a movie.

I think most people are open to knew languages or others learning them (unless you're a 'true american'... I understand what you guys were talking about on that, I learned that in my linguistics class) but it's just the fact that it started from a movie, I think that catches people and makes them take a step back and say 'what?'.

So I guess my pet peeve about Avatar is that people aren't open to it as other movies.

Also, my American Indian Philosophies professor disliked this movie because it was playing on American Indians. Which I can see how he sees it that way, I guess.

I don't know how AVATAR can do any harm to the American Indians. I personally love them more now than I ever did before!

I think that one of the reasons people aren't so open to it it because it threatens their feeling of security in where their power comes from. In short, they aren't ready to face the consequences of their actions. Also, it's such a politically charged movie, with all it's anti-military sentiments (at least that's how I perceived it).

I think that Avatar scared some people. They're starting to realize "Hey, one day my lights might not come on and my car's not going to be able to start." We're all so used to everything just being there when we want it. What will we do when that's no longer the case?

Finally, my community is very Christian and Conservative, so Avatar didn't go over very well here. I sometimes feel like an island unto myself surrounded by a sea of people who are happy to be consumers without making any effort to give a little back. I can feel myself changing, particularly in the faith department. I'm drawn to what some call "paganism", although I'm not entirely sure what exactly I'm headed towards. All I ask is that I continue to be accepted as I have since January.

Lorey, we're all so glad you've decided to join us! I'll tell you that everyone here, even Tawtewng, is just great. Everybody is so helpful and nice. You'll love it here!

all languages started off as made up at one point in time and look how that turned out.  now we have over 200 dialects and languages.  i agree with you Rain, the language is only as alive as the people speak it.  ^_^

This language is alive and kicking, even more than Esperanto and Klingon combined in my mind, I can't say for sure, but what is the gauge of fluency here.  I think towards the 2nd movie it will reach that status, of being an actual spoken language

I get frustrated when people say that I'm wasting my time with Na'vi. Well, guess what? It's MY time! So there!

I'm a Christian, and I also get frustrated with people not being open to the "greenie" message. People, we LIVE on Earth. It's important. Can you make a tiger? No. Can you make a Saimaa Ringed Seal? No. I can't and you can't and no one else can. The Earth is our most vauable resousrce and we treat it like crap.

I also hate it when people say "So, are you learning Avatarian?". I just say, "No." ::)

I don't like it when people try to change my views on the movie. Avatar changed my life, so I don't take those comments lightly.

I also don't like the people who just refuse to try and help the earth (much like some of the RDA mercs). They say "It's just a rock, what can we do about it?". It happens to be the only "rock" within many light years that we happen to know have life.

i really don't like it when people who don't like the movie start calling it racist or name your other comments.  i can see their arugments but it's like an Fundamentalist Christian coming onto wiccan videos (even though he doesn't like it or whatever; and it has happened on mulitple occasions i've had to block several from my videos...) and start bashing it.  it just really irks me.  if you don't like the movie for name your reasons then don't watch it don't have anything to do with it, however let those of us who do enjoy the movie enjoy it.  By Eywa is that so hard to do?  Honestly.   >:(
