Possible Avatar sequel clip?
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:45:12 pm »
Kaltxì ma frapo! I hope all is well.  :) Tonight was the 90th Oscar awards, so Rolex did a commercial with numerous different film directors, one including James Cameron. In this commercial, there is a very, very quick shot of Cameron on top of the Hallelujah Mountains with a creature flying past in the distance. I know for a FACT that this is not from the film, so it must be a glimpse of what the technology and graphics will be like in the sequels. Just in the clip you can tell that the special effects have improved, along with scale. - Also, in this clip the flying creature does not look like an Ikran or Toruk- so is it a new creature? It looks to be the size of an Ikran, so maybe it's a new creature? Who knows? - But please take a look at this clip and tell me what you think! I think it's probably the first shot we got of the Avatar sequels. This shot has me SUPER PUMPED!!!!  :) ;D

- Clip is taken from this video

Interesting. The mountains really look like a mountain range in China, I forget what it's called...

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Hunan province, with added waterfalls and exotic flying creatures (all CGI?).

I feel it's a little too early for fully rendered movie footage to be available, but I could be wrong.

Pasha, an Avatar story, my current fanfic, Avatar related.

The Dragon Affair my last fanfic, non Avatar related.

Well, considering the computing power of today's machines versus the machines of 9-10 years ago, there's a big difference between Intel Core 2 Duo/AMD Athlon 64 and Intel Core i7 8th gen/AMD Ryzen. They could render in much less time, and even with yesterday's flagship GPUs versus today's flagship GPUs.

TEA, I agree with You.
I can't see any speed improvement in rendering algorithms. Next generations of CPU and GPU don't offer a performance jump. But overall progress is visible.
Each year gives us better graphic effects and 2-3 years later regular "gaming PC" can handle that game.
I think that actual supercomputers can render Av1 in real time. Within next 20 years regular PC should have that power. Add more 20 years and phone will have enough performance to show real time Avatar-like image in VR :P

On the other hand Cameron plans to double resolution (quadruple pixels count) and double (triple) FPS. Keep in mind that Av2 may need more rendering time even with the best equipment available today.
Any errors in spelling, tact or fact are transmission errors.

I'm not saying that it's an actual clip from the sequels, I'm just saying that it's a quick glimpse of what it'll look like with better special effects in the sequels.  :)

Avatar 1 still looks phenomenal today. I can only imagine what Avatar 2 will look like.

I don't think this is from Avatar 2. I also saw the spot live at the Oscars and it was more about inserting the directors into their films by means of an image montage. Since the Hallelujah mountains are probably symbolic of the movie for many people, they probably just put Cameron there. It would be interesting to know whether a central company produced all the clips for this or whether each production company was allowed or even forced to send in clips for its own films (no idea how the contractual conditions in Hollywood regulate this).

If something is new, then at most the flying animal, which is very similar to an Ikran.

I'm not saying that its a clip from the actual sequel, I'm saying that it's a clip of the special effect change/advancement for the sequels- kinda like a tiny sneak-peak.  :)
