Payoang and I (as some of you may know) have been pretty close for a little over a year, and found each other thanks to the amazing film and this forum.  Given it's significance to us, he and I celebrated AVATAR day in a little way by watching the original version of the film on his housemate's big TV and by making our rendition of...

Grandma's Teylu!

If anyone is interested in trying to recreate it, here's what we did, trying to follow the idea of how the Na'vi eat with the resources at our disposal.

Ingredients:

- jumbo shirmp (teylu equivalent)
- plantain ( an interesting starch to make it more filling)
- assorted veggies (mushrooms, bell pepper, onions)
- fruit (pomegranate in our case) to marinade
- assorted spices
- big leaves to serve it on

I sliced then fried the plantains and set aside, then Payoang prepped and cooked the shrimp and veggies (stir-fry) and added spices.
After our endeavor, we decided that next time we'd try cooking the entire thing in a banana leaf or some other leaf/husk on a BBQ if we could, and perhaps engineer some sort of sauce. Overall a tasty, nutritious dinner!

I'll have to field that to Payoang - he cooked them :)

never cook shrimp too long, but I don't know how long they cooked theirs for LOL

I have one little suggestion to add to this page of deliciousness...  If you thread the shrimp onto skewers down the length of the body they don't curl and look much more like actual teylu.  Observe:  http://amaya-kawaii.deviantart.com/art/oeya-teylu-210757404

Great minds think alike, hmm?  I made this delicious dish this summer!

I believe it was yesterday.

But it is different for each country, I suppose. When was Avatar first ever launched in theaters near you?

Awesome - I thought of breading them. And good tip about skewering them up so they don't stay curled :D

hehe the "breading" was just shake'n'bake, I totally cheated there HRH  But yeah, the skewers are a bit of extra time and effort because you really can't do them quickly without tearing the shrimp but they really do add to the look of the "teylu"

I am tempted to try to find actual grubs and make something similar...

Be sure they're the edible kind ;) ;D

Awesome! But I think I'd make this with chicken instead, for two reasons, 1: I don't like seafood, 2: everything that's weird tends to taste like chicken ;D

This teylu is enough for a whole dish I suppose:
