I've always been able to do that sound.

For Halloween I usually dress up as one of the Xenomorphs from the Aliens series, and the best way to mimic them is to do the "wild animal" hiss sound, which is done the same way as the Na'vi hissing sound.

When I was a little kid in Kindergarten/1st grade I used to play pretend games with my friends that usually involved different animals. I was always a reptile or snake of some sort, and that was where I learned to do that hissing sound.

I've actually found myself slipping into doing it silently when something is annoying me. Not with my mouth all the way open, but just between my lips, very quietly. >.>
