That hissing noise.

Does anyone know how to make that hissing the Na'vi (assuming it is humanly possable) do? The way I hiss sounds simlare but doesn't look as cool.

Bring the back of your tongue close to the uvula, and blow as much air as you can out almost between making a Voiceless_uvular_fricative or Voiceless_velar_fricative but very heavy on the fricative and prolonged, so take a deep breath.   You should be able to lower your Jaw to make this movement with your tongue.

The human mouth can only aproximate the sound.  But, it is kind of like the feeling you get from your soft pallet trying to build phlegm for a boogie loogie, but very dry.

the human mouth can aproximate that noise otherwise sam wouldnt have been able to do it when he hisses at his Ikran!

i will try and put up a recording of the sound of it up

but to do it it you have to open your mouth, tongue at the bottom and and breathe out heavily. at least thats how i do it.

I'm surprised how natural the positioning came to me, from my first time watching the movie. Perhaps I'm just a good copycat.

What you do is:

1) open your mouth

2) Keeping the front of your tongue down, put the back of your tongue up to the roof of your mouth, make it almost touch.

3*optional*) Tense your cheek muscles, showing your teeth

4) breath normally out of your mouth (You can't do it if you also breath through your nose)

5) Play with where the back of your tongue is, as well as how hard you exhale, to reach the desired sound.

I think I got it. It's probably wrong but I won't find out till 1) the dvd comes out or 2) I find an adio file I can play.

Well pretty much all my life I've been able to hiss haha. I seem to be doing it more often nowadays ha. It's fun to hiss at people XD

Depending on how you pronounce it, it's spelled [x] or [χ].

I've been making that noise at my friends when they tell me bad puns for a LONG time. For some reason they didn't notice until after I saw Avatar O_o. I don't have any more advice on pronouncing it than already has been posted though.

Its kinda similar to the cat hiss so its kinda easy for me. Sometimes it hurts my throat a little but eventually its fine. Its kinda fun to do it lol.
