I think James Cameron did a really wonderful and outstanding job of holding us humans up a mirror. The art of holding up a mirror to someone is to make him recognize himself in the mirror. If he rejects the mirror image as not being himself, the mirror didn't do its job of showing oneself to oneself.
The way we are, we like to see ourselves as something good, humanoid, etc. Every mirror image must please at least a little bit, otherwise we refuse to see it as ourselves. So for us to sympathize with The Other, The Other of course had to be pretty and like we are in many ways.
Ugly aliens = no sympathy.
It's that simple.

I'm active in animal rights and I like toying with the idea, what if Cameron hadn't used extraterrestrial humanoid non-humans, but terrestrial non-humans.
After all, there are rather pretty non-human species here on earth, that actually do share and have quite a bit in common with us.

Imagine, for instance, Jake came to a planet, and the extraterrestrials were simply...
Horses. - Just for instance.
I liked the idea so much, that I created an entire movie, using countless documentary clips of horses and the Avatar soundtrack and many speech snippets. Of course it's totally illegal because of copyright laws, but I just love the idea and concept of it!

I also think that the fact they spoke English helped people that didn't know Na'vi, of course. Imagine if all they did in the movie was speak a foriegn language, with no subtitles? It wouldn't be that interesting if you couldn't understand them.

I also agree that beauty helps for us to take their side against the enemy, even though we realize that the enemy is us..
