Trying to get my parents (who liked the movie but didn't love it) to watch the 16 min extended edition. They haven't seen it since Jan 2010!! :o :o

This is the same for me. I've seen Avatar several times since it came out and when the Hometree is destroyed and the battle is on I still bawl my eyes out. When Jake does his speech it makes tears form and chills crawl up my spine. There's no other movie that will give me the same reaction.

Though I have 3 DVD copies of the movie (bought one and all the others were gifts) and one BlueRay copy, I DVR'ed it some time ago from the Direct TV satellite. So pretty much every time I sit down for some tube time, if nothing good is on, I flip over and start Avatar again. So pretty much I see some segment of Avatar every day.

September 2010.  :( My family doesn't have a blu-ray player ATM, and it didn't seem worth buying the DVD just to buy it again in blu-ray. We should be upgrading everything soon, so I'll see it then.  :D

Buy the Blu-ray, rip it in the computer, and make a DVD version (use DVDStyler, good free&open-source program) to carry around in your pocket in case your friends' house doesn't have a bluray player. Ripping is perfectly legal as long you don't redistribute your result.

Yeah, but the DVD version wouldn't have the same quality, and quality's the most important bit. Isn't it, precious?

Trust me, 20th Century Fox is a bad DVD producer. Therefore, select PAL - 720x576 - 16:9 and your own private DVD version will far exceed the quality of the official DVD - though not the BluRay. My point is that you don't need to buy both.
