I found these offline webpages on a CD-ROM containing Internet Explorer 3.0. I'd say that we've come a long way since then :)

Man that brings back memories. I remember when I first used the internet in 1998 with my dad. 28.8 dial-up on Erols ISP. Most sites looked like that.

13 years later...it looks nothing alike.

I love watching that old computer world war III movie with Matthew Broderick. The internet didn't even really exist back then but watching him work with networks was pretty cool.

I can remember those times. For me, the best part about it was that the websites weren't overloaded with Flash and all those layer ads. Whoever invented layer ads, I really hope he burns in hell for that! Damn, I miss those time :(

I remember when I first used what's one of most used (if not THE most used) ActiveX's: Flash Player...back when it was like version 2 or 3.

No no no, Haxalot, you have it all wrong.

Webpages then couldn't have loaded in less than 1/10 a second, you'd need the 10-minute delay to make it real.

Could always implement that in javascript. Have the text appear in sections and the images a line of pixels at a time :P

Could probably apply a server bandwidth limit on that specific virtual host ::)

Hey, at least it worked. Currently my DSL at home is somewhat broken and I have random disconnects and router reboots. Never had such issues with my good old 56k modems :(

Don't knock old school. The only internet access I have at our cabin in Colorado is dialup. I get 4800 baud on a good day because it is at the end of 34 miles of copper and two A/D-D/A conversions.
Fancy web pages are a pain on that hookup.

It may be slow but at least you have sth. With modern technology you wouldn't have a connection even with just half of this distance (actually here you can't get reliable ADSL if you are further away than 1200m from the next telephone switch (those devices responsible for acting as a switch between you and the fibre optical stuff of your provider)

Oh no it wasn't! I remember those day's, all to clearly, and searching before search engines was a pain in the txìim!
56k modem, I had one of those.
28.8k modem, I had one of those.
14k modem, yep, I had one of those too!

I'll keep with what I have now, till something better comes along.

Sounds like you know where to hide the baud-ies... =)

I used to do 90's style pages for everything in the way of personal web-spaces.

Now everything has to be so complicated, and the content has not changed...

we read text,
we look at pictures,
we watch videos playback,
we listen to music,
we send data to a database,
we report on data from a database,

Security has improved... I think...

The navigational style changes have been flashy and interesting to look at, but have anyone really improved the internet, or just the perception of the users?
