Yeah, I'd say a year ago today, I was probably so engrossed in OMFG IT'S CHRISTMAS EVE mode that I hasn't even paying much attention to "that movie with the blue aliens getting all the hype", as I referred to Avatar back then. (How naive, lol...) It wasn't until January 20th that I went to see it. Maybe in a month or so I'll be able to start reminiscing about anniversaries, but right now I'm still only 11 months into the madness. (And, due to school being, well...important, I've basically taken the last three months off. I'd say 7 or 8 months of madness, tops.)

NEED THAT YEAR!

Kayrìlien

You still saw it a lot earlier than I did. Quick poll: is there anyone on the forum who saw Avatar for the first time after March 23rd?

I'm interested in the other extreme. Are there any people here who read the scriptment back in the 90s?
Please tell me if you see mistakes in a Na'vi post of mine. It's the only way I'll learn. :P

A year ago today I made plans to see Avatar with my friend. I was so excited, I liked it since the first commercial.

Haha, same here. I saw the first trailer, and I said to my dad, "I know that this is going to be a good movie."

My sister saw it with me, and got really excited too. Of course, she denies it.  ::)

At least she's not like my dad, whop watches it with me, then points out plot holes.  ::) But of course, he's always in the room while I watch it.  ;)

Txontaw

Like what kind of plot holes?

Like the way Jake Sully got so skilled in only three months, that sort of thing. And he always comes in at the mating scene and says, "Alien sex! Ew!".  >:(

Txontaw

Haha, alien sex.

I don't think that three months is an unrealistic time. His avatar is already strong going in, and an intense training regiment every day would get him to where he was pretty quickly.

Lolet

Yeah, and he's a pretty sharp guy.

The alien sex thing pisses me off to no end though.  >:( Way to make it weird, Dad.

Txontaw

I wouldn't take it to heart. From what it sounds like (obviously I have no idea what the actual situation is), he's just playfully trying to annoy you, most likely due to the fact that you like the movie more than... usual (?).

Oh yes, plot holes. My mom pointed out a few for me. :P

Lolet

And my brother joins in the fun too.  ::)

(I realize this is a major act of necroposting. Oeru txoa livu.)

It has been a decade — a decade! — since I made this post, and now 11 years since the Na'vi language first came to my attention. That's enough time that some of the links in my original post have now gone stale (the internet as currently designed has a terrible memory). Links in the grammar have had to be updated to refer to Archive.org.

But the Na'vi language learning community is still one of the most lively for an invented language originating in film or TV (certainly more than Klingon, say). More of the day-to-day traffic has moved to chat platforms, like practically everyone else has, but most of the original forums still exist and have activity. It really is astonishing. I suspect Paul's blog is an important element of the longevity. Even if there are still things we're not sure how to say, we know he's still engaged.

I have nothing especially profound to add to this, but did want to mark an interesting anniversary, to remember the start, when I met new friends while we were all trying to figure out how to say this or that nìNa'vi.

Here's to another decade. 'Ivong Lì'fya leNa'vi.

Yeah, it's really awesome that Learn Na'vi community is still live, even after already such long time :)

That's indeed awesome!
It would be even more awesome to keep it live for more decades. :D :)
