Thanks for the information! But that only partly answers my question...cold feet aren't a problem, is that what you want to tell me? Is that only a myth?

Sorry, I totally overlooked your question lol. My feet get cold very easily and I HATE it! It's very uncomfortable and even painful for me to have cold feet, so I'd be miserable. I would probably use what clothing I do have to dry them, but if resuming my walk would just get them wet again, then I probably wouldn't bother. You'd just have to tough it out I guess. Raising your body temp thru increasing your pace might help too.

As far as not being a problem, well, you won't catch a cold that way, but you may certainly suffer cold damage, such as frost bite, if it is extremely cold, but it'd have to be freezing for that. You'd definitely experience discomfort.

Yeah if you get some sort of fungal infection then you would have to find a way to not wear closed shoes because it holds in all the moisture and allows it to grow. Not fun at all.

For the future, if you are going to a college and sharing a shower with anybody be sure to wear shower shoes. Saves a lot of trouble and money.

Shared showers anywhere, not just college. Not just fungal either, warts, verrucas plus any cuts you may have on your feet could get infected.

Just got back from a "barefoot" (five fingers) walk and jog with the BF. Walked 2 miles and jogged 1 :)

I just got a pair of KSOs a couple days ago.  Still trying to get my feet used to them.  I've been a chronic shoe wearer my whole life, so switching to a minimalist type shoe is going to take a little while to adjust to.  Other than that I'm really liking them, other than the fact that I am between sizes.  My big toe is forcing me up to a larger size (44), which means all of my other toes tend to have almost too much room in them...

Did you have a look at the VFF forum someone posted in this thread? They have a sub-forum only about sizing...

Have you ever been cut or burned?
No. I've walked on glass and similar both wearing VFFs and barefoot, and even had my feet stood on wearing VFFs, no problem at all :)

I had the chance to walk barefoot in a sludgy meadow this weekend. It was...wet and cold, I'd say. But it was raining, so I can't really tell if it was the rain that made me shiver or the ground. Anyway, a question came to my mind: What should I do with cold and wet feet if I haven't got socks with me or a nice pair of shoes, nor do I have the ability to dry them? Just keep on walking and propably catching a cold? Or do my feet become immune to coldness? I don't think so...
You can't catch a cold through your feet, it's a virus. Temperature has nothing to do with it at all.

I walk barefoot in the rain, no problem.

Congratulations :)

I have the same size issue as you (and I'm a 44 too), I'm considering trying a 43 with my next pair as it seems like the toe pockets do lengthen ever so slightly as you wear them in.

I have seen these shoes... they look great for wearing around the house rather than socks. I might buy myself a pair for relaxing in.
Take your shoes off! - by far the best thing to wear around the house on your feet is nothing. It's the one place you don't have to worry at all about stepping on something :)
Get some VFFs for outside - I prefer to go barefoot outside too whereever possible, but I wear VFFs for going long distances or to places where shoes are required.

Well I live in a dorm and sometimes there are some strange things on the floor. I would also wear the VFF's outside as well.

Any suggestion on what type of VFF I should get? I am looking at the KSO or the Classic

Is it possible this is due to sluggish circulation?  If so, the answer is more physical activity to improve your peripheral circulation.

KSOs will pass for a normal shoe at first glance more easily, particularly in black (but are still clearly something else if you take more than a passing glance :) ), and personally, I prefer the styling. They are also slightly warmer (but not by much) from what I've heard, which is obviously good when it's cold but less so in the summer (mine do make my feet get a bit sweaty with extended use if I'm running) and in addition, I've read that a lot of people prefer the KSO's fitting. The main downside to the KSOs is that they have a thicker sole (4mm in total) :(, so you get less sense of the ground (although any will obviously reduce it, another reason to go completely barefoot when you can).
I have KSOs and currently no others, although I guess I may eventually get a pair of classics as well.

I don't know how anyone could comfortably wear these in the winter, in the snow...

I've walked in snow with nothing on my feet at all. The only problem you'd have is slush getting in over the top but that happens with regular shoes too

Whoa, that's chilling...barefoot in the snow!  I've done it before, but only under emergency conditions! :o  I don't like slush in my shoes either.  Wonder when they'll come out with FF HotFoot for winter or something like that.

New for fall.  Nice review on birthdayshoes.com.

I have a pair of leather KSO Treks that I wear in the winter.  They keep my feet warm enough, and leave really entertaining prints in the snow.    :)

The best 'shoes' I have, are permanently attached to my legs.  For years iv always found my natural feet, to be best for walking outdoors.  If you have not taken a walk in the forest with your bare feet, your really missing out.  It is very nice to be able to feel the earth below your feet - soil, grass, rocks, mud, dust, sand, etc.  Leather shoes hide all this and you never get to experience it if you wear them.  With experience, unnatural hard/rough surfaces such as sidewalks really wont be an issue too, as your feet get more and more tough as you practice.  A few years ago I remember stepping on a sharp rock once, and it didn't even attempt to cut any skin because of how 'durable' they became.  I'll wear shoes when I need to, but other than that really, they are put away in a closet.

Its really nice that other people here appreciate this, and I hope that more people try it out.  Sometimes though you may get tired of random people firing comments at you such as "hey, nice shoes".

But of course I have an easy fix for that statement every time its said :)

This is a problem.
When I go in the city or anyway, noone walked barefoot.
I have still seen nobody who walked barefoot. Everyone have shoes on the feets.
So this is the thing why I don't walk barefoot in the public. I walked only barefoot when I'm alone or with friends.
Everyone is stared all the time when I walk barefoot.
Or say anything like you've said.

Lots of buisnesses in America at least have a policy of "no shoes, no shirt, no service." It keeps the buildings sanitary mostly.

Seen this. And I understand it, but not the shoe thing entirely. What's the problem with that? Do they fear only bummers visit their stores or restaurants or what? Well, at least VFFs exist! And you could get fancy fake sandals, seen that before: Only some cord you wear on your feet which gives the illusion you'd be wearing sandals while you're in fact barefoot! I thought that was funny. ;D
