Human No More

Does anyone else here like to go barefoot? I saw it on Txur Niftxavang's profile and it made me think that there isn't a thread here, while there's one on ToS.

I first started going barefoot maybe 5-6 months after first seeing Avatar, at first mostly just when walking home at night from gigs and similar, but in the last 3-4 months, I've taken it much further, I have decided to only wear shoes when it is completely necessary, which really just means to gigs, and have been going around town barefoot ;D - I recently got some FiveFingers so even when shoes are needed, I can be as close to barefoot as I can. I really like how it feels, especially on a hot day, and I find I can run better as well. Of course, it gets some strange looks from people, but I find that funny :)
Walking barefoot in a forest or on grass is something everyone should try, and if you're brave enough, then go around town barefoot... your feet will be quite weak at first, but they get very tough quite quickly :)

Hahahaha! You're awesome, my friend! ;D

I love barefooting, though I seem to be the only one around here. It feels great. My feet still hurt quite a lot, but I hope that may change soon. I mean...I started last week! I hope this starts to become a bigger thing because it's really really cool to go barefoot. Or to wear Vibrams. Discovered these shoes a longer time before the barefoot thing...don't remember it really. But these look awesome! Got to try them. :D

I grew up spending my summers barefoot from the time I was 4 or 5 8)  Since we spent the summers at the cabin, the only time I put shoes on was when I had to go into town for whatever reason.  I walk barefoot around the house and in the garden, but I dislike walking barefoot on concrete, so I have a tendency to do it a lot less when I'm in the city.

Now I just have to get published so I can move to the island and go barefoot all the time ;D ;)  It really is a more comfortable way to walk, after all.  Especially for me, since my feet are a somewhat unusual shape and don't fit most shoes comfortably.

I'm getting good are barefoot - and heel impact without shoes (give it 40 years...) - but I'm just getting use to fresh gravel. Once that's down, I'll be walking around a geek on vampire feet. But I call my friend "Jesus" because he can walk and jump on gravel like a pillow.

I personally only go barefoot at home, but a guy at my school had been going around barefoot last fall and I thought he was awesome. :D He had the whole 'hippy' style and all of that: the total win! ;D I admire such people, honestly. The ones that aren't afraid of showing up just like that at school, no matter what people might think. :)

You do realize that when you walk barefoot the pad of your foot should impact before your heel, right?  Just walk the way that instinctively feels best!

guest2859

Yeah, I know, but for some reason the impact never makes it past the skin. But normally I am on pad, but for a long stride it switches to heel.

Human No More

You're supposed to take shorter strides when barefoot. It takes some getting used to, but it's a lot more comfortable :)

As for concrete etc. , just keep trying, my feet are tough enough that it doesn't bother me now and I can run on most surfaces :)

It's not so much the burning of the concrete as the much higher likelihood of running across something that's going to cut me.  The youth in my neighborhood are somewhat disaffected, but being Canadian they aren't really dangerous, they just like shattering bottles and suchlike to show their displeasure.  I've sliced open the bottom of my feet once or twice in the wilderness, I REALLY don't want to do it on the filthy streets.  (and yes, even if you walk barefoot for a long time and build up a thick callus you can slice your feet open.  I have a high arch, it doesn't get callused, and thus is easy to slice if something sharp happens to be standing up from the flat of whatever is being walked on)

I wish I could go barefoot at school, but it's not allowed. Fun is against the rules. Usually I either go barefoot or sockfoot at home.  :D

There is a tread for barefooting around here somewhere (I think it's in the "Tribe" section) but it's very dead.

I personally don't go barefoot, though I would like to. I just don't get many practical opportunities. I do have an Australian cousin who does though. I don't think I've ever seen her with shoes on.

I would like to get as far as Crocodile Dundee to be able to scale trees like a ladder, but it'd be a few years.

I used to be able to do that. But now whenever I look at a tree I just think, "My jeans would get dirty".  ::)

For me it's mainly the paranoia of getting stepped on, not what I step upon.  Plus most of the civilized world indoors doesn't seem to like barefoot :P

Bah, who needs "civilized" anyway?

Besides, if you really want civilized, look at places like Japan where you never wear your outdoor shoes inside!  Now THAT is civilized.

guest2859

I think the foundation of houses, pavement and exhaust that kills enough land and life is too much civilization for me...

Haha! Very funny! I unfortunately have to tell you that gravel is kinda important - the best training for your soles. And just to be sure, if you don't like it because it hurts: It'll stop. And that will make you happy. ;)
