Presidentship of Trump...
« on: January 19, 2017, 05:12:53 pm »
OK, so I wasn't entirely honest yesterday, there's something I missed out, something that's been more pervasive today.

I'm scared.

Trump will be sworn in midday tomorrow. That's less than eighteen hours away, and to be honest, the implications for global politics trouble me deeply.
I hope some how his presidency works out, but I honestly can't see how it can.

Excited. I supported Trump since the day he announced his candidacy, mainly because I strongly agree with his views on pretty much all of America's problems. My family has had a history of right-wing conservative views, and I am proud to be a Trump supporter. I strongly believe that he will do good for America. He may not do all the things he said, but at least he'll get us going in the right direction.  :)

Votes for Clinton:-  65 844 954
Votes for Trump:-  62 979 879
Figure from CNN here .....

Number of non-US citizens who wanted Clinton to win, approximately:- 7 500 000 000
Number of non-US citizens who wanted Trump to win, approximately:-  0

Bottom line .....
Like it or not, Trump does not represent the majority. I predict trouble!

OK, I'm going to be mean, and tell you a truth.

You are an American, what do you know about the rest of the world? You know, the bits that aren't the USA?

What do you know about those of us who live outside your borders, the other seven and a half billion humans that share planet Earth with you?

Which bit and for how long?

I need to make an apology, I apologize for offense caused by the above post, I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings, least of all among the members here.

However, I have have known a number of Americans, some I count as personal friends, some as work colleagues, some as both.
What I cannot avoid is the unfortunate fact that American education teaches very little about the rest of the world, American programing is noticeably skewed to ignore the rest of the world as much as it can. American news barely ever mentions foreign news stories that do not directly affect the US.
Most of the Americans I know or have known in RL, left the US as a result of deployment of the army, air force, navy or marines. (their own deployment, a spouse's, a parent's or parents')

Almost all of them, have at one time or another confessed to me that they now realize just how little they knew about the world beyond the borders of the US. How different the outside world is.
They all expected it to be basically the same as the US, all now understand that it isn't.

I'm not sure who separated this out from the Current Emotions thread, but thank you I guess, only the first post of this set is Current Emotions relevant.

UK, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and Germany. 2-week tour.
All of the Americans I know in RL have spent moths/years living outside of the US.

I've had a lot of people I know bash me online for being a hardcore Trump supporter.
I have to admit this doesn't exactly surprize me.
How many people have been pleased that he won?
How many of those were non-US citizens?

Outside the US, he is widely seen as a mentally unstable fascist maniac, a tyrant in the making. I have seen him compared with Mussolini, and the similarity is chilling.
I've also seen and heard him compared with Adolf Hitler (and others), the similarity is nothing like as close as it is to Mussolini, but it is still frightening.
Have a conversation about Trump with anyone here who isn't from the US, ask weather they are happy he won.
Conversation about Trump winning are something that I have been involved in a lot since about July last year.
Up until November eighth, only one person I spoke to took the possibility seriously. Since the election, shock, disbelief, and genuine belief that the results were tainted. False news, misinformation and blatant lies were told about Hillary Clinton, not just by Trump. It has come out that many of the fake news stories which may have affected the election originated from a small town in Macedonia! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-38168281

Apology accepted, but keep in mind, it is nearly impossible to offend me.
I do not wish to offend you, or anyone else, but the world outside your borders cannot believe you guys voted for Trump!

Edit:- Thank you Tìtstewan.

The Netherlands here... ;)  I think around 25% of Dutch people support Trump, and 75 % hate him. (Note: this is a wild guess based on what I see around me and hear in the media. I am not sure if official figures exist.)

Myself, I very much reject Trump's views on almost everything, or more specifically, that he does not seem to have a vision, or if he has, it is very well hidden between the half-truths, lies and insults he usually tells. I am amazed that so many people support him.

(Oh, and let me, as a non-American, speak out my amazement about the American voting system and gerrymandering in particular. I cannot understand why this was never changed... it's so non-transparent...)

Although, I was not very much concerned about the election, as it imo doesn't matter much (if someone wants to make major changes, they end up like Kennedy), but since I utmost dislike H. Clinton, I don't mind this result.

Well, Trump's victory is (not nice) surprise for many people. Even me didn't expect him to win, but it happened. But let's take it realistic - Earth will not turn in reverse because of that. He said many bombastic words, promised too much a did all possible and impossible to win. Now it's time to move from words to actions.
I believe now he must slow down and start to behave normally - and first of all show what he can do. Maybe he surprises us in good way and makes America better (what not necessarily mean to make world better). If he'll do too bad, there are means how to stop him and kick off the office.
However I'm very interested in his first steps and actions. This can show what we can expect.
And it's possible, that after four years we'll see, that he didn't do too much and there will be same disappointment as with Obama.

It's very funny for me that one can very easily estimate other's behaviour and reactions by political alignment.

One disclaimer: Politics is about clash of Ideas, not feelings. So let the feeling at home.

One of the first thing is, Popular vote does not matter, nope. Why? Well... maybe because USA isn't Democracy but Republic. In addition, most of those almost 3 mil votes for Clinton are from California or New York. What does it mean? It means that Electoral college work because it keeps part of power in 'flyover states'. If there were no Electoral college, Coasts would rule over rest of country.
There comes inevitable division of living area. Rural areas tend to be more conservative, Urban tend to be much more liberal. In the end, you got small blue city islands in Red sea but as i said, popular vote does not matter because USA is Republic. If you want democracy, you'll have to change contitution. Funny how nobody was bothered with it suddenly untill now.

To the non-US citizens, you know, there are not citizens so they can f*ck off with their demands. Right to vote is ONLY for citizens because that's the definition of citizens. You don't want random strangers to come somewhere and make change you don't like, right? Remind me of taking millions of potentional voters from one place to another to overrun local population in election so that you kick off local pop. of ruling over their own land.

Almost all of them, have at one time or another confessed to me that they now realize just how little they knew about the world beyond the borders of the US. How different the outside world is.
They all expected it to be basically the same as the US, all now understand that it isn't.
I hear this kind of thing for first time but I guess it only shows real face of 'Murica but I can understand the historical causes. So I don't suprise me, people in USA don't much about world outside although...

^this, this is same kind of hypocrisy you call other people out for. So you assumed that most people in US are dumb that USA = world but yet think that opinions on Trump outside of USA is Trump = <insert all buzzwords from racist to 'lit. Hitler'>? Good.

It was mostly MSM vs people who tried to find info on Internet. MSM mostly fed people with buzzwords that Trump is XYZ alien who eat small childs because he is not the same old politician as other candidates are. On the other side, you had people who read election programs, investigated and made their own conclusion and it is easier to convince people with facts than he is bad because he said mean things.

So basicaly, in Czech rep. the small central European post-communist country, the people's opinion were liberals for Clinton, socialist/commies for Bernie and rest for Trump but more accurately, it was Clinton - long-running politician who doesn't want change much and tries hide corruption, Trump - businessman who focus on main issues and appeal on people, Bernie - socialist/commie who want to try the same experiment East Europe had not gone through yet.

Overall, Trump means change - may be good, may be bad but still change and change is, in long term, better than stagnation which Clinton represented.
The WW3 thing, I'd like to know how good relationship with Russia will cause WW3 but whatever, right? When CNN says it's true, it must be true!

Ps: and if you want someone or something to blame Trump on, you should blame democracts(Clinton) for rigging election against Bernie Sanders and more than 100+ mil of Americans who were to lazy to go and vote. [FYI, argument that minorities are less likely to get ID card is false because you need ID Card for buying guns, driving license and other stuff.]

Ps3: The reaction of Media, supporters, protesters and other is very similar to what happened when we directly voted for president in Czech rep. for first time. Older less popular candidate in Media won by conservative votes from rural areas... same #NotMyPresident, similar protesters destroying everything around to show how they respect election result.
