This makes me so angry I shouldn't be posting in a PG13 board...

This is getting ridiculous. Anyone else seing military or UN action? Something has to be done to stop this, it endangers everyone.

Let's contact cameron, and ask what we can do, and any emergency plans they might have to stop this, even if I have to blow something up, I will help stop this.

Any government, willing to disregard all care for life and others, that is beyond selfish, and with lack of morals as the Brazilian government, should be dismantled. By any and all means necessary.

It's a "for the greater good" situation here. They are not disregarding "all care for life", they are regarding the care for more life over the care of less life, quantitative terms being population affected by the positives over the negatives.

Mind you also that the corruption of this government, like all governments, -is- there. Yet, at the same time, humans -want- to do good, and so they are looking at a situation of they have "this" amount of money and have to help "this" amount of people with that limited amount of money. If someone can come up with a better solution, and better lobbying power, then good to go.

Zefanaya

To tell a race of people that have been living in the area far longer then the government has even existed, to get out or else (die, because that's whats going to happen), is unacceptable. If I recall, three Brazilian cities will be completely flooded and to my knowledge, no relocation plans are in the work for those people. Event the Three Rivers Dam has relocation. Also, this will have world reaching effects. With the amount of methane that will be released we can cut our time to go green in half. Current estimantes (2010) say we have, at the most, 13 years before severe ecological damage is incurred. Have fun cutting that in half. At some point eyes have to be opened, people blinded by greed will see. I my self am rapidly losing hope in petitions. If we want ANY chance of stopping this, major UN and US action is going to be required. Wether that be diplomatic or military, change needs to be made, ignorance kills.

On a side note, do we know if the Peace Core is working on this? As for earlier suggestions. Contacting Cameron is a very good idea, we need any and all support and options.

First off, this is not the first time anything like this has happened. Any group of "humans" (remember, we are all of the same race) that have moved into an area where another group is living has always told them to do one of 3 things, assimilate, die, or gtfo. Plain and simple. And it's not just the evil white man that's done this either. More cases throughout history show more non-Caucasian ancestral peoples have done it that not. But that's beside the point.

In the beginning relocation was offered to these people. Bet you didn't here about that from your "truth" telling sources. These people refused it. So now, the governing body must do what it needs to to bring benefit to the majority. As the old adage goes, majority rules.

Secondly, I want to see the hard data of these so called "scientific studies" that show that what is being claimed is true. After I see that data, and deem it to be plausible, I want to see the credentials of those that made these studies. Reason being is that ever since the falsification and complete charlatanism of Al Gore's fake science, everyone should be skeptical of and claims to human caused global climate change. Because honestly, its fake. Climate change is going on yes, but being radically increased because of human efforts, is false.

And finally, more of a nit picky thing for me, its Peace Corps.

Forgive the type its 3AM here. As for the studies, I would have to search through the since channel archives to find the exact source, which to my knowledge is not online and I don't have cable/sat so no on-demand archives. The damage is all ready apparent just look out side, it will get worse in the years to come. As for my "truth telling source", I have been affiliated with Amazon Watch for years. I also am planning a trip to the Xingu area in later August, economic status permitting that is. As for Gore, I don't care what he says. Oh, give me your facts as to why you think we can't impact the planet we live on. Also "I see that data, and deem it to be plausible" "I want to see the credentials of those that made these studies." Lets see your credentials, lets see why your qualified to pass judgement. I'm not, I'm a journalist.

My friend, Global Climate change -is- happening, yes. All scientists agree that it is really happening. But what they do not agree on is WHY it is happening. Some still claim that its being accelerated, note the word, by humans. Others say that it is just a normal cycle that the Earth goes through. Those scientists that claim that we are accelerating it also claim that if the global temperature rises 2 degrees, it'll cause catastrophic events. Yet, during the times of the vikings, the global temperature was 4-5 degrees higher, and the best wine was made in England. Why? Because it was warmer that far north.

And the reason for me stating those things about wanting to see the data and making my own judgment is because that is what EVERYONE should be doing. Not just believing what they are being told by one source. But to go out and search for it themselves, amongst multiple sources that don't come from the same bias/background. What I mean by that last part is that if you are, for example, researching Republicans and all you look through is Liberal Democratic new sources, well you are going to get a very skewed sense of direction and data, no matter how many of those sources you find. You need to look everywhere for information on this, even those that you deem to be the enemy and causing this damage. Cause you never know, they might actually have data available that shows something of what these guys are claim might be wrong.

That is the essence of journalism my friend. Journalism is not just taking a story and regurgitating it. It's finding a story, then researching all you can until you have come up with an unbiased story to present to people, so that THEY can make the decisions for themselves.

ExLibrisMortis is right. We need to look at both sides of the picture. Sure, if you talk to these so-called 'climate scientists' with their so-called 'research' published in things they like to call 'peer reviewed scientific journals' you'll come away thinking that the evidence for anthropogenic climate change is very strong. But I agree with ExLibrisMortis that we should start listening to random angry poorly-informed bloggers and people who are completely incapable of getting a paper on this subject into a relevant respected journal. :P

Oi, let's keep this on topic.  This thread is about the Xingu River Basin and its people; we can knock heads over climate change somewhere else.

Edit:  And if you want to help the people of the Xingu, contact your nearest Brazilian embassy or consulate, and if you haven't already, SIGN THE PETITION.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? I have never been a proponent of that, since the proselytized "needs of the many" are frequently just misrepresented needs of the greedy and powerful.

Even if their mindset is to benefit their people, the Brazilian government has badly mistaken who are the "many" and who are the "few". It is not their cities versus the indigenous Xingu River tribes, but rather it's their interests versus interests of the rest of the world. Whether they like it or not, Brazil has almost autonomous stewardship over a resource that is vital to the future of the rest of the planet. Unfortunately, there are corrupt individuals in that government that see the Amazon basin rainforest as their own personal property to be exploited for the benefit of the few well-connected and uncaring corporations that are pulling their strings.

It has already been confirmed by several sources that this project is just the beginning of an almost unbelievable plan of destruction to the Amazon basin. It is a stated goal of the proponents of the Belo Monte dam to make this the first of dozens more just like it on other rivers in the Amazon region. This will guarantee that a vital part of the heritage and support system of our world disappears for good.

And that's progress?

The problem is not enough resources, it is too many people. We are trying to fix the problem from the wrong end, in my opinion.

In rebuttal to the claim that a 2 degree shift in earth's climate is not catastrophic, only if it reaches equilibrium at that higher temperature will it not be catastrophic, If it does not, than it will be catastrophic.

I know. Oe sapalute (correct that im on my phone), I had an atitude. I work grave yard so I am really tired when I read through the forums. Your right. As for my sources, Amazon watch is my most trusted, out of anything I can get, but I read a lot of sources. I believe we can screw up this world, but I also believe it go's through its own phases. We could be permanently damaging the earth, or just accelerating a phase. Either way, I don't think the Dam is in everyone's best interest and should be stopped. Anyone is open and has the right to, their opinion.
