Your only issue is that is the news of the Belo Monte dam more important that the entire Middle East destabilizing. Cause I'm pretty sure the the middle east destabilizing will have a much larger affect on the world than the dam. Cause right now, thats the immediate competition for news time.

Middle East falling apart = involvement for sure on the U.S. part.

Belo Monte? Its just trees...

Sadly this is how it is looked at by some people I am sure.

Jake: How will I know if she chooses me?
Neytiri: She will try to kill you.
Jake: Outstanding. *takes out an ikran-catcher and walks through hometree looking for women*

Indeed, it is the more immediate threat. We are entering a very tense time, filled with change. Change hurts, but we must hope and pray that the right people take the right positions. I do think, at the end of the day, all will be made right. But this change has to come, we are a growing race, and pain often accompanies growth. We need to care for one another, we are all eytsmukan in this world. I know world peace will never happen, war will always exists. But the more people willing to care about others, more then themselves, will make life more bearable, and bring the right form of growth.

It's falling apart because of previous US involvement, which kept the region stable. Terrible policy really, but it kept this stable.

Ok, let's seriously keep this thread about the Belo Monte dam...  Thanks

Well said!

Irayo. And yes, lets think of ways we can stop or help the people who are and will be suffering because of the dam.

I'm gunna send 3 letters for a start and then I'll send a warning >=( (offcourse I won't be able to do anything...) (but at least it'd be cool to watch the news and see there's a 'warning letter' found at the consulate so they increased security... )

Kì'eyawn

I've been meaning to for a few days  :-[, but today i'm actually going to sit down and write a letter to my local Brazilian consulate.

Though we often talk of threats and violence, it may not be the right course of action...yet. I believe in negotiation and trying to find a peaceful solution. However, with that said, their come's time in which a violence is necessary. I think that a well educated and passionate community can do amazing things. The more people who know about this, the more support we will have. Numbers, often win wars. Also, an observation, most the people active in this discussion are in the northern continents, USA, Canada, Europe. Its just a quick thought so Im not sure if Im wrong. But I think we need to get some activists talking down south if you know what I mean.

The situation is becoming urgent!!

Petition:

STOP BELO MONTE—NO MEGA-DAM IN THE AMAZON

Belo Monte would be a project bigger than the Panama Canal, flooding at least 400,000 acres of rainforest, displacing 40,000 indigenous and local people, and destroying the priceless habitats of countless unique species -- all to create power that could easily be generated through investments in energy efficiency.

Pressure on President Dilma against the dam is rising, the President of Brazil's Environmental Agency just resigned, refusing to issue Belo Monte a construction license and challenging strong political pressure to go forward with this disastrous project. Environmental specialists, indigenous leaders and civil society agree that Belo Monte will be a massive environmental scar in the heart of the Amazon.

Construction could start next month - let's raise the pressure on President Dilma to stop this dam! Sign the petition now, before the bulldozers move in -- it will be delivered to Brasilia!
