I think J. Cameron's letter is well worth reading, as it is not simply an appeal but also with well-rounded reasoning.

I actually hadn't read the letter yet; if he has actually done all of this research himself and written the letter of his own accord rather than at the behest of some organization, then I am rather impressed. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I haven't heard of this! This is very cool of Cameron to put his actions where his mouth / film is.
Very cool!
And what a great letter he wrote! Really good!!
I think it's crucial to point out better alternatives to the dam. Namely wind and solar energy.
South America is the place where new ideas can be tried more easily than in "old" industrialized countries like in Europe. At least that goes for political ideas.
Why shouldn't it work for energy ideas too?
We have the same problems in the US and Europe: Everyone (or those who care to know) knows that solar and wind energy are better than fossil and atomic energy (our rivers are already destroyed). Yet because of existing companies and laziness to try and develop new things, even in Europe and the US fossil and atomic power is selected way too often over wind and solar energy.
It would be really nice if Brazil could do better here (too).

I'll have to get more info about this before taking action myself such as writing a letter.
Does anyone know any environmental organizations specializing on this?
Perhaps they have ready-made letters to download and send to embassies?
If not, I guess we could use an altered version of James' great letter to Da Silva.
That's much easier than writing an own letter from scratch.
Anyway, I certainly already support the cause emotionally!

This (writing letters, etc.) is one of the many things we *CAN* do, to reclaim our "Pandora".
