bid??
« on: August 22, 2013, 03:30:41 pm »
Yesterday, I sent myself a message to remind me to bid in an EBAY auction (which I forgot about anyway ;)  ) in Na'vi, and suddenly realized we have no way to say 'bid'. I racked my brain for a substitute, and did not come up with anything, so i left the word untranslated.

Since I don't think the Na'vi have auctions (unless there is a Pandoran version of EBAY running in Eywa ::)  ), they really have no use for a word like 'bid'. Therefore I won't request this in the LEP. But I am curious how others here might express this idea, using existing vocabulary.

Yawey ngahu!

Interesting. I would translate "bid" as "give" = tìng. Because, you want to give them (Ebay, saler etc) something (usually money).
Oel tìng ngaru n Y-ti tsa-X-ìri
I give you n Y for that X.

Oel tìng ngaru tsìnga tskxetsìypit tsatsnganìri.
I give you four pebbles for this flesh.

But indeed, I have any Idea how the Na'vi would say that. :)

1.: Visited Wiktionary - "To offer as a price"
2.: Translated "offer" - stxenutìng.
3.: Make a sentence - "Stxenutivìng for n-a x-t." n-amount, x-currency.

Oel tìng ngaru tsìnga tskxetsìypìl tsatsngan.
I give you four pebbles for this flesh.
More grammatical:

tsatsnganìri oel tìng ngaru tsìnga tskxetsyìpit

I think, Ezy Ryder’s version is very close to ‘bid’ … one offers something in exchange for something else.

For me stxenutìng was what first poped in my mind. But tìng give sense too.

So, here's what you can hear on Pandoran stock market:
A: Lora ioi. New tsat. Stxenutìng tsìnga tskxetsyìpit a nrr. Srake mll'an?
B: Tìng nì'ul. Lu ngäzìk fwa ngop tsat.
A: Tsun tivung tukrut.
B: Ke kin tsat. Slä ngey tstal oeru ha'.
A: Lu ngeyä.
B: Tam. Ftxivey ioit a sunu ngar....

Oe lu skxawng skxakep. Slä oe nerume mi.

This is a very interesting translation / interpretation of a barter system. It nicely gets around words like cost, pay, owe, buy, sell, bid, etc. IFFFF the Na'vi ever would do this (and I have my doubts) this may be what it sounds like.
