So, Dr. Frommer said that nouns ending in -ia get the genitive -iä, e.g. soaia > soaiä

Now, I wanted to write something 'of the study' ... does ftia > tìftia changes to tìftiä in the genitive then?
It seems strange to me because it is a derivation after all...

Thoughts?

Kemaweyan

Why not? I think it's a phonetic rule and does not matter what part of speech the word is and how it's created...

I thought that soaiä and omatikayaä are exceptions to a general rule. I'm currently trying to find the source for when he finally decided on ayaä and iaä but cant seem to find it.

It was here: http://naviteri.org/2011/05/some-miscellaneous-vocabulary/

Quote from: PawlMaw fwa fkol Kelutralit skola'a, lemreya hapxìtu tsasoaiä* txolula mipa kelkuti mì tayo.

*The genitive of nouns ending in –ia is just –iä: soaia, Gen. soaiä.

But I don't remember a rule about Omaticayaä :-\

Yes, I should have given the link to the rule for -ia > -iä ... sorry.

The LEP tries to get a rule on omatikaya > omatikayaä since February now ;D Hang in there, I hope it will come.

I didn't see anything in that post about bases ending in -ia if they were -iaä or -iä. I only saw confirmations on bases ending in -i and -a.

I stand corrected... I thought it was about an example sentence where this exception got used.

speaking of generalizing the pattern of soaiä, kefyak? Can that be generalized?

it is already spoken that -i ends as -iyä and -a as -ayä as far as I know. but -ia ends as -iä and -aya ends as -ayaä (yet lì'fyayä)..

I think with Omatikayaä we can say that this is an exception.

Another matter I just realised why this construct of *tìftiä seems strange to me... It's the shift in stress.

It's soa but with ftia it would become *tìftiä which—stress on a case ending—I thought was not possible.

Edit: I see just now that tìftia is given as ftia in the dictionary. I never noticed that ... hm, then my comment above can be ignored.

That is surely a mistake.  The tì- should not cause that sort of accent shift.

Also, I agree that we should ask Frommer to confirm an exception to the -ia- > -iä genitive if the a is accented.

I will bookmark this thread and ask him. I hope I can get some time with him while he's in Portland tomorrow. I'll definitely let everyone know what he says if I do get to interview him :)
