My teacher was telling us about a test we had coming up. He announced it in our facebook group and this is what took place:

Karyu:Test this week for Animation! (stuff coming on the test)
Oe: tìfmetok lu krrpe?
Karyu: mune trr krr
Oe: tewti! Ngal omum na'vi srak?

What makes it funny is that he says he would never watch avatar (cause everybody wanted to watch it, he has hipster ways). Anyway, he dosn't speak na'vi and what he typed was just random, but it kinda made sense since this happened sunday and the test is on tuesday (2 days time)  ;D.

correcting my bad grammar is gladly accepted  :D

GEOvanne

ok, so its not as random as I thought  :-[
He said he looked up the words, at least I got him to do something avatar related. Victory for me  ;D

Well, we can point out that ngal omum na'vi srak? is not entirely correct. One could say nga plltxe nìNa'vi srak? (I think it would be appropriate for any situation) or ngaru smon lì'fya leNa'vi srak?

GEOvanne

Would this also be correct: Ngal plltxe nìNa'vit srak?

Just without agentive and patientive:

 Nga plltxe nìNa'vi srak?
 Do you speak Na'vi?

nìNa'vi is an adverb, but only nouns and pronouns could be object (with -t). So there is no object and then you don't need agentive too.
Nìrangal frapo tsirvun pivlltxe nìNa'vi :D

WOU!!!  :o Your teacher spoke Na'vi? That's flippin awesome! Tho he did make a small error: Mune needs to be attributed to trr with an a so it should be "munea trr krr." Probably could have said "mesrr" as well. But still, that's pretty cool!

Ma Sireayä I am curious to know why you don't feel that "omum" is the right choice. The way I understand smon vs omum is smon is more for people knowing people and omum is for knowing subjects...i.e. languages. Slä nìmun fì'u lu oeyä tìtsalm nì'aw. New stivawm sì'efut alahe :)

Actually, it's 'be familiar with' ... not quite 'recognize' in my book.

Tswusayona Tsamsiyu

well yeah, recognize is just the closest word I could think of. should have looked in the dictionary. it's just that in Hebrew the word for "to be familiar with" can also be used as "recognize".

Ah, I see... that's interesting. Would have been helpful for last month's LEP :)

I think omum means "be aware of some kind of facts or statements", rather than "to be familiar" with, for example, languages, people, situations etc.
