I have to say, even though I'm getting a lot of the stuff wrong on the worksheets, they're really useful in clearing up some questions I had. Nìtxan irayo!

Here's to not knowing exactly what you're saying and having fun with it.

Thanks so much for the worksheets! They definitely helped clear things up.

One thing I have a question about, though, is the affixes1.3.2 worksheet. The example is

oe-ri tìng tukru sempul-ru
I-[top] give spear father-[dat]
"I give my spear to father"

I know that underneath it says spear isn't marked because it's the subject of the verb "to give," but isn't it still the direct object (the thing being given) and therefore needs -ti? I'm not sure if what I'm saying is wrong or if this was a mistake, or if it hasn't been cleared up by Frommer yet. Any help would be appreciated! >< Dative is giving me issues...

Also I'm really sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere! I looked around for info about dative stuff and all I found was that we don't seem to know much about how to use it.

Irayo!

You're right there, almost. The spear isn't the subject, it's the direct object of "give". "I" is the subject, or more specifically the agent. (I'm trying to be consistent with using that word for Ergative case.) Sempul is the indirect object. So.

Oe-ri (Or, alternatively, -l) tìng tukruti sempulru.

I am green with jealousy over you guys that seem to roll with this stuff so easily!  Ask me about astrophysics, or VASIMR magnetoplasma propulsion systems, or pyrotechnic special effects and I can talk like an adult. I start diddling in languages and the wheels come off my brain and I overheat.

I haven't had this much fun learning something new since the stone age when I was in college.   ;D

Haha. We all felt like that at some time I think. It just takes practice and exposure. Once you nail the grammar, its just a matter of memorizing vocab.

as a novice to linguistic terms,

what I found most difficult about the worksheet as far as learning, was being able to identify intransitive verbs vs transitave verbs. It would be helpful in the instructive part of the sheet, the explanation of the two types were expanded on further. A couple of examples of intransitive verbs, transitive verbs, followed by like 3 or 4 problems where you identify the different parts of each type of verb would be really really helpful.

Otherwise, things seem pretty sweet taronyu.

I printed off an laminated all but the newest worksheets, now im using a Vis-a-Vis marker and working on them. This is great, I can just 3 ring binder them and have my mobile "learn Na'vi worksheets and dictionary" pack.

I secretly really love these worksheets. This is how I got through Japanese and I plan on doing these sheets a billion times. Txan Irayo!

Good call. I kind of take transitivity for granted, I've done way to many case languages not to know it. I'll go through the sheet again, try and make it a bit more tight, and explain that. Nice thought.

Glad you all are enjoying them. More on the way! :)

Damn these worsheets look awesome! :D
Definitly gonna do all some times :)

just 2 details I found and thought i had to say:

Quote1.)______-ri lu ke ____ taronyu
You are not warriors

Taronyu is hunter, not warrior (warrior is Tsamsiyu, as said above in the worksheet :))

and
Quote3.) _____-ri lu _____taryonyu
You two are hunters

here just taronyu was misspelled
well just these two came to my eyes, I didn't proofread it :)

oh and if you are going to correct that, write Eywa with a big E here: (and at number 4 also) :D
Quote2.) _____-ri lu nìwotx eywayä _____eveng
We are all eywa's children

More than that, just say "Superb work guys! Outstanding!" ;D

For the 1.1 worksheets, wouldn't it be necessary for some of these prefixes where you are using "me-" to be "mun-" instead? (I'm not sure if this has been debunked elsewhere, but I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere in the Pocket Guide that "me-" is only use when referring to a pair, like menari for a pair of eyes, and "mun-" is used when referring to two unpaired items, like muntukru for two spears. But I suppose then 'mun' being part of mated casts doubt on that... Oe ke si omum :|)

Also, I have a question about the answer to #3:

Also - In the 1.3.2 there was a word that bugged my English brain ;).  Exercises is misspelled HORRIBLY as "Excersizes."  Fì'u kawng längu!!

(Sorry to double post but I felt that more corrections to other parts of the worksheets should be noted in their own post.)

#3 of worksheet 1.3.2-Cases:

The problem reads Is that your sister? and on the answer sheet it reads Is she your sister (which changes things a bit).

#2/8 of worksheet 1.3.2-Cases:

#9 of worksheet 1.3.2-Cases:

It reads "_____ lu tsmuke-______ srak? Is that your sister"
Ok, I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but shouldn't it read "_____ lu tsasmuke-_____ srak? Is that your sister?"
Or possibly ...tsatu tsmuke...?

Considering the word "that" is not found anywhere in the sentence as it stands right now, and since the sentence should probably translate more like That (person) is your sister, yes?.  It needs one or the other of those corrections (probably the latter) because "that" is the subject of the sentence, and without it present in the Na'vi version, that sentence has no subject.  Adding the question mark on the English sentence isn't completely necessary, though.

#10 of worksheet 1.3.2-Cases:

And finally, I'm very confused about the whole Oe-ri / Oe-yä thing and why the word that is being possessed gets the genitive marker when the word that IS possessing is the topic.  It seems really backwards, since "Ikranyä wutso" is correct (I think!) for "The ikran's meal," why does "My father" become "Oeri sempulyä"?

This question would probably be better placed in the pre/suf/affixes section, but since it is relevant to the worksheets I thought it pertinent to put it here.

Made one tonight on Gender and Pejorative/Laudative.
Probably needs some correction. I'd love input

Alìm - thanks a ton! I'll make those corrections sometime soon.

I'm really confused on what is the proper versions for the worksheets. Could someone list the latest versions of each worksheet?

Sarkath

could you just edit the first post when the worksheets come out?

right now the system hasn't been figured out and fixed entirely.  After the new year I'll have some time to reorganize and recompile them for 'public release.'  Again, these are sort of in 'beta' right now, which is why they are not posted in the beginner forum yet. I want to make sure the grammar and the examples are correct first so we don't spread misinformation.

I've noticed that it's easiest to converse with someone about the language (Skxawng I'm looking at you and Lawl)
If anyone needs help or has questions just AIM me and Love4Eywa
I have a basic knowledge on most aspects of the language and am now just memorizing vocabulary.
Also I'm great with pronunciation and describing how to articulate the words.
