WELCOME to our little brand of insanity. You will find that we span the spectrum of backgrounds, and personalities here, but we all seem to share a very deep love for the message the movie was all about. Sit down, take off your shoes, and put your feet up. Get comfortable, you are among kindred spirits here. Where in the States do you live? Rural or Urban? In your "Perfect World", how would we live with Nature??

This is a very open community. I wrote "Ñoldo" instead of "Naʼvi" on my application form and they still let me in!

It's a great place for learning and practicing lìʼfya leNaʼvi. If you do well learning lots of rules, start with Naʼvi in a Nutshell (NiaN around here) and proceed to Horen lìʼfyayä leNaʼvi, the reference grammar. If you do better with a more traditional style, try this prezi and Tirea Aean's blog. If you prefer lots of words and less grammar, try Kaltxì Palulukan's Learn Naʼvi the Easy Way.

Naʼvi isn't as divergent from English as Klingon is, but it has a few features that are rare in human languages; verbs are inflected with infixes (taron becomes tamaron, etc.), nouns are marked if they're either the subject or the object of a transitive verb, there are voiced fricatives but no voiced stops, and (not that rare IRL) a class of sounds called "ejectives" that sound like a stop followed by a click.

If you have a specific question, or you've tried your hand at something and want to know where you went wrong, the beginners' forum isn't far below this one and you will get your answer, guaranteed! (Unless there isn't one. That happens sometimes with constructed languages, especially new constructed languages and languages constructed for a very different culture. For example, it's hard to talk about heaven in Naʼvi, because the Na'vi don't have the idea of gods living in the sky.)

Been browsing around the site awhile now & can say its nice to see such a variety of genuine & intelligent voices here. Its been really fun failing @ Na'vi a little better each time till I get it, & shrugging off weird looks from friends who say its lame to pick up a fictional language — learning's enough a reason for me I guess. Not to mention how beautiful it is when spoken fluently, or even as mentioned earlier some of the concepts the film itself brings up (which is ultimately subject to the viewer's interpretation — how they "see" through themselves & the world around them). Since it was asked, I live in the US, in Oregon's town o' Beavers (Beaverton), and LOVE mother nature since birth & to my grave. Anyway, I know I'm not likely typing it right, but niftxavang irayo to all you for the welcome. (ack! — must go re-read the thread I noticed teaching folk's to type Na'vi accent again. With time & patience, I'll improve..)
