Hey everyone! I found this site by accident and found it to be very interesting! I would like to try learning Na'vi and this site looks like a really good place to start. Oh I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a translation? I was wondering if anyone could tell me what ash tree meadow or ash/tree/meadow OR simply Ashley would be in Na'vi? I tried to figure this out myself but couldn't seem to. I thought it would be fun to start out learning Na'vi by knowing what my name would translate into! Thanks.

Just wanted to add, that Äsli ("as-lee") could also be an option, depends on your name is pronounced.

Edit: Ninja'd by you So I'd say Äsli, but I could be wrong.

Na'vi is primarily a "spoken" language.  So adjusting your name to Na'vi is a little challenging as the Na'vi do not have a "sh" sound.  (And the letter "c" does not exist.)  Although "ts" as in tsunami does...

Thus something close, might be [ Äs'ley ] pronounced "as" like cat, a momentary pause, lay (as in sleigh) > as-(momentary pause)-ley?
Or perhaps [ Äs'haley ] which draws out to be:  as-(momentary pause)-ha-lay?

It depends if you say, "ash-ley" or "ash-sha-ley" in how you say it...

Tìtstewan is correct, dialect pronunciations/variations would definitely affect your spelling.

And Eana Unil I think is closest.  Maybe add a glottal stop in the middle for the ash-lee momentary pause?  > Äs'li ?

Entry error in dict-Na'vi? 

(Edit/Add:  My old March 2013 and the current dictionary do not have tei.  It must be a glitch.)

(There are very few root "ei" words in Na'vi.  leioae, fpeio, awaiei and the added <ei> verb infix of course.  And leioae has the syllables of le-i-o-a-e (lei is not together).)

Yes, ma juiicy.  Tìtstewan's link is a good place to start.  As you explore this forum, you will find a beginner's area with all sorts of helpful threads as you learn the language.  Plus there are a number of fun workbooks you can download from LN (free) to learn words.  Plus there is the Memrise (a vocabulary learning site) that has Na'vi courses (word memorization).

I would say that Äsli would be the best way to say Ashley ['æʃ.li] in Na'vi. Basically, just turn sh into s.

We have a place here in Nevada called 'Ash Meadows', right outside of Death Valley National Park. It is a wildlife viewing area. Although I think the 'ash' here refers to an act of volcanism, it could also refer to ash trees. (I've never stopped there, only passed through on my way to/from Death Valley.) In the interest of reasonable brevity, I would be inclined to choose Txepìva Txayo or possibly Txayo Txepìva as a name. Of course, the choice is left up to you, and you can use more words in your name if you want.

I also agree with everyone else here that Äsli is the most reasonable (and free of possible conflicts with infixes/suffixes) translation of your name. I also kind of like Taronyu Leleioae's idea of putting a glottal stop in the middle of your name. The syllable break in the middle of the way this name is typically pronounced (and I work with an Ashley) is almost strong enough to be a glottal stop, and it certainly makes the name a little more 'alien'. However, the glottal stop in Taronyu Leleioae's proposals forms an illegal consonant cluster, so you would use Äsʼeli. keep the pronunciation of the /e/ short and it kind of makes up for the lack of an /sh/ sound.

Ugh.   Overlooked that s + ' can't be together being the end of a syllable as a cluster, even though they can be together otherwise...  
Makes a note for another NiaN update correction...  I had been thinking that Äs' was ok.

Fundamentals are most important (sentence structure, how to use and modify verbs, adjectives/adverbs, etc...)
We just want to help and be sure your Na'vi-fied name is as close as we can plausibly make it...
