Hello! New here.
« on: February 08, 2014, 06:42:27 pm »
Alrighty. I was gonna lurk some more until I had a better grasp on Na'vi, but registering was necessary in order to access some threads and stuff.  Therefore, I don't even know if my name is correct or how to do ANYTHING--besides pronounce words.  I've read a lot of the beginner files and know, mostly, where to go to find stuff. Just needed full access.  I've never even really participated in a forum before, so... all new!  It'll take me some time to adjust.  I'm learning Na'vi because I've always wanted to and, somehow, now seems like a great time.  I seriously love this culture and language and feel great now that I'm taking steps to learn it.

Ok!  About my name!  I really need help here.  Names are really important to me, and having to create my name without the grammar understanding is freaking me out.  I hope the username that shows is Spe'etu Tìrol.  Explanation: My actual name means "hostage" or "pledge."  I love to sing.  What I got from looking up words in the dictionary is Captive Song.  I also like how, since Na'vi has free word order, it can also mean Song Captive.  However, in one case, "captive" is an adjective, and the other, a noun.  I currently have no clue if that changes anything and was trying to figure it out, but needed full access to help.  So here I am, unsure of my own name and hoping I can fix it later.  Please, oh, please.

Anyway, hello!  Kaltxì!  I'll be the shadow in that corner over there.   ???

Kaltxì ulte zola'u nìprrte', ma Speetu Tirol!

Great to see you and welcome to this wonderful place! :)
Hmmm, regarding your name, I'm not sure, I thought about Spawne'ea Tìrol - sp<awn>e'e-a tìrol that infix <awn> turns a verb into an attributive adjective (passive) which means "captived song".
I would wait for more opinions by other members, maybe they have more ideas. :)

Btw, if you love to sing, you should try the Pamrel nìNa'vi section if you want to sing some songs in Na'vi. ;)
Anyway, I hope you will have a lots of fun here!

Kaltxì ma Speetu Tirol! Zola'u nìprrte'!

Irayo (thank you) for joining the Na'vi learner's community. I hope you enjoy learning, and participating with the other good folks here.

You have an interesting name! Although I am not sure I would like that meaning. In all fairness though, my real last name 'Stofel' means 'dumbhead or lout' ::)

There are a few interesting things you can do with your Na'vi name. If you are trying to imply the idea of a song sung by a captive, you could use a real simple form: Spe'etuä Tìrol As you may well be aware of by now, the /ä/ creates a possessive form of a noun, commonly called the 'genitive case'. If you put the /-ä/ ending on Tìrol, you get Spe'etu Tìrolä, which could meam 'captive of song'. In either of these cases, you could reverse the words with no change in meaning-- in a name especially, you want to choose what seems the best or is the most meaningful for you, as you will likely (hopefully!) be using it for a long time.

Another idea that came to mind was Spe'etu Rolyu - 'Captive singer'. Adding the /-yu/ suffix to a verb (rol - sing) creates a form for 'doer' or in this case 'singer'.

BTW, you can use the glottal stop /'/ and special characters /ä, ì/ in your forum name. However, they are not allowed in your sign-on username. But since you probably sign in only once in a while, that shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Thanks so much, guys!  That was really helpful.  Right now, I can really only repeat phrases in the Common Phrases thread.   :-[  I'll definitely look into the Na'vi music and try to fix my forum name.  Thanks again!
