I can't roll my R's to save my life which is going to make speaking Na'vi particularly challenging for me, but I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

Same here... I've been trying for years but I can't roll my R's, the closest I can do is the Japanese "r".
(formerly known as Kawtu)

Rolling your R's is easy! Pretend you're a purring kitty! :p

I forgot to introduce myself when I joined, so here I go.
I'm marte. I'm 17 years old and live in Portugal. I go to an arts high school and love drawing and digital art, but I'm planning on studying Physics and Astronomy in the future.
I love learning languages, but I never dedicate myself to it fully unfortunately. I'm the kind of person who never finished things.
In the past I tried learning Golic Vulcan from Star Trek which is rather similar to Na'vi in some aspects, but I had no one to practise with so it became a bit boring. I hope to learn Klingon someday but the harsh sounds of the language make my throat sore D:
I speak English, Portuguese, a bit of Japanese and understand Spanish.

What I loved most about Avatar was the landscapes, the sci-fi and terraspace-like elements in the scenery of Pandora. It had such a beautiful sky, being the moon to a blue gas giant!
So hello!

Txep

Hey all!

Aidan, 38, gay, polyglot, in Denver, CO.

I have a masters in Celtic Languages from Harvard, and I speak or am VERY familiar with: Mandarin, Spanish, French, Latin, Greek, Proto-Indo-European, Old Norse, Irish, Welsh, Old Irish, Finnish, and assorted other constructed languages. Hopefully I'll be able to help people out here while I learn Na'vi myself.

Taruia

Hey everyone,

I'm Taru. 23 year old female graphic design student. I live in PA, in the middle of Amish country lol XD I'm an avid sci-fi fan, and have become instantly obsessed with Avatar. i am a huge fan of languages, and while I'm only fluent in English and American Sign Language, I have dabbled in many others. I am very excited to see such a huge group of like-minded people getting together so soon after Avatar came out, and I can't wait to learn and work with all of you!

Oh dear, how do I follow up 9 pages of introductions with something original?  ;D

Kaltxì, frapo! My name is Abraleth (or, if you must know my real name, Andrew), I'm a junior in high school, and I live in New York.

A couple of reasons why I joined this forum:
1. I've had the equivalent of 3 years of high school Spanish classes, but language never really interested me until I started taking Latin. I don't know why, but it was probably because of Frederick Wheelock's great textbook.
2. I've read Watership Down, and Richard Adams' invented language is quite beautiful. That, combined with Latin, got me hooked.
3. I love Avatar (obviously), but I never knew that a Na'vi language was invented for the film. I thought it was made up at first, but maybe that was because I was reading the subtitles more than I was paying attention to the actual language. Once I found that out, it was just a matter of time before I found this website. So, here I am.

Novelistgirl

Hey there!  :D

My name's Marie. I'm French. 24 years old.
Mmmm... what else could I say about me?... I studied languages in college. English particularly, it's not my mother tongue, and I always wanted to try and learn it properly, that's why I majored it in college. I also studied a bit of Italian, German and Latin. But forgot almost all of it...  :-[ Only English interested me. I don't know why. It's a beautiful language, with beautiful sounds. And - even if Na'vi sounds totally different - I think there are very beautiful sounds in this language too.  :) Not an easy task to learn a language. Took me years to learn English. But I want to give it a try. I just downloaded the Na'vi pocket guide. Let's see...  ;)

Kaltxi,
My name is James.  I'm 21 and studying Communicative Disorders in Lafayette, La.  I kind of just fell into Comm D after bouncing around the Art department for a while even though Linguistics would have been a great fit for me as well.

I want to learn Na'vi out of pure interest and enjoyment I find in language.  I used to know some French and German although now I remember none of the French and only select words of German.  My Spanish is very rough and I have a friend who wants me to learn Gaelic with him. Haha.

Point is I'm here to learn and have some fun with this new langauge.

There are only a couple small grammatical errors, but otherwise your english is pretty good. I'm pretty sure there are some people here who speak german, couldn't hurt to make friends with them :)

My name is Jon and im from England.

For much deeper and coincidental reasons Avatar is much more than a movie to me, as such I am going to the best of my ability to learn as much about the Na'vi and their culture as possible.

I am a listen-learner. By repeating what I can read phonetically or hear someone else say I can learn phrases. I find reading phrases that are not phonetically written down very hard, but hopefully this will change as I get used to the Na'vi language.

I hope this site will be the foundation for much more than just understanding the basic language.

Kaltxì! I'm 45, from Vancouver BC. I have a gift for languages and a lot of informally acquired linguistic knowledge. I speak 4 languages pretty fluently and bits and pieces of maybe a dozen others, with an accent that's usually good enough to get me into trouble when it sounds like I'm way more fluent than I really am. :D I'm absolutely fascinated to see how Na'vi evolves.

Oh, and not a virgin. ;)

dotster

Hello all, my name is Doty (pron: dough-tee). I live in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. I am a certified interpreter in American Sign Language and I speak French and Portuguese fluently due to family; i have lived in both Brazil and France for a few years each. I've sporadically studied languages like Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Irish Gaelic, German, Dutch, Swahili, Urudu, Basque and Arabic but do not consider myself anywhere close to fluent in any of them. I tend to start one language and then get excited about another one and switch to that one for a while etc. so my knowledge of the said languages is pretty sparse. I love studying language and culture and I'm excited to be here learning with all of you guys!
