Wind12

I joined back in May during the vote for the 2014 t-shirts, but I have never officially said hello.
I just wanted to say that it was very cool to meet some of you at the meet, and while I am on AF a lot I am going to try to visit my other smuk as well.  :) :)

Kaltxì ulte zola'u nìprrte' fìtsenge! :D

Well, I was on no meet, sadly... :'( Maybe it changes in the future.
Anyway, you are very welcome here! :D

Kaltxì! It was really cool chatting with you about possible Pandoran weather patterns and our lack of official knowledge and vocabulary thereof. This forum is a great place to hang out and get acquainted with the language. :) Nice to see you again.

Wind12

Irayo guys! I will def. try to stop in more :) :) :)

Yes that was neat to discus that,  :D :D  :D There is so much potential :), by the way I had the honor of talking to Dr. Frommer a little about it and he was generous enough to say that I could continue to e-mail him about it on his blog :D , do you know where I can find a link to his blog( as always I apologize if I am asking skxawng questions) ?

That's really cool! I wonder what he will have to say. Maybe someone could go through all the film, observing Pandoran weather systems and then trying to come up with words for them.

Frommer's blog about Na'vi is called Na'viteri. It's here at http://naviteri.org

This is also a cool way to get lots and lots of nouns. How many things on Pandora do we get to see with our eyes, and don't have the word/name for it yet? (stares up at that BIG*** GAS GIANT in the sky, scratching chin...)

OH and btw, new words can be anonymously suggested here on the forums: http://forum.learnnavi.org/word-submissions/

Wind12

Irayo :) :) :)

Yes, on the film, there was rain on jakes first kill, there was the plasma storm that was cut out, and there was what looked like some sort of tropical cyclone during the beginning of the film from space, I understand though that it is not realistic to think hat they would show a lot of exotic weather that the moon may have as it would obviously cost a lot to render, so unless it is important to the story, possible weather would likely not show up in the film.
Irayo for that link, after my jog, I will take a look :)

Kaltxì, ma Wind12!

I am trying to place you among all the faces that were at the meet. Sometimes, that is difficult, as I am not good remembering faces.

We have plenty of words for weather. And several types of weather have been observed on Pandora in the film. (Also remember when it was raining when Jake was updating his video log?) Some other types can be surmised, based on info in the ASG. How weather systems behave on Pandora, though, is beyond what we currently know, bwyond that which can be predicted by simple atmospheric physics. So although there is definitely room for a few new words, there is much that only Mr.Cameron knows.

As for weather on Polyphemus, K. Pawl (Karyu Pawl, our name for Paul Frommer here) might actually be the expert, as he has a substantial background in astrophysics.

Irayo! Yes I wish I had gotten around more as I am a shy person, the only things I can say that might jog your memory is that I had glasses and I didn't bring my razor as it was my first time flying, and I was worried about TSA so I started out shaven and got not so shaven on the last day   :-[

I may upload a pic of me soon to the forum if I can figure it out  :-[

Yes, I know that JC has the final say in everything we're not sure of :) :) I just asked about hurricanes and tornadoes, since on the opening of the movie we see something that at least looks very strongly like a tropical cyclone from space, and the Valkery Shuttel flew through some cumulonimbi on its entry, so the possibility of tornadoes( or at least waterspouts) seems to be not too far of a stretch( even if they are very rare for some reason). But Irayo for the info, and yes there was also rain on a Jakes first kill scene at the start at least. :)

Those might have just been low pressure systems, and not hurricaines. Tornados are mesoscale or smaller, and would not be easily visible from space. They are also usually short-lived.

My bet though is that Pandora does have thunderstorms. But in the part of Pandora where the events of Avatar take place, they would more likely be 'air mass' thunderstorms, which are rarely severe or spawn tornados. Severe storms and/or tornados are a feature of temperate climates. These probably happen on Pandora, but further north or south. I am sure enough that there are tornado-like phenomena on Pandora that if a word for same came up in the LEP project, I would not call it 'Cameronian'.

True enough, it was mainly more of a curiosity  :) :) :)
Yes, the reason that I went with "tropical cyclone" was mainly the eye like feature, but yes mid latitude storms here on earth can get that to, I was just leaning toward it being more likely a "heat engine" storm instead of a mid latitude wave cyclone as I am unsertain if Pandora has the temperature contrasts to produce strong mid latitude storms like that, but that is always a possibility.
As for tornadoes, yes I do not expect them to be much of an issue at all in the rainforest regions, I just know that there is a word for "hail" in Na'vi and even snow... herwì so I figured if those exist then somewhere on Pandora the conditions may exist for that, there are also waterspouts/land spouts on Earth that don't need the conditions that produce stronger tornadoes, and those are cooler in the sense that they tend to be less damaging.
Irayo Nìtxan for the discussion!!

Ma Wind12, it is obvious that you have a solid understanding of how weather systems work on earth, and I think your analysis is likely to be correct.

Since Pandora is propourted to have cold regions, and as you say, we have terms for snow and ice, it is safe to assume there is a mid-latitude wave system similar to what we have on earth (non weatherphiles reading this, think 'jet stream', which divide warm and cold regions). The mid-latitiude storms are where the most interesting weather is on earth, and probably on Pandora as well.

Waterspouts were common in fall storms when I lived near Lake Ontario, and also Lake Michigan. We get some small tornados out here in the west, where rotation in thunderstorms is fairly rare. I am not sure if it is the same or different mechanisms that trigger these small kinds of events. We also get a lot of dust devils here, and these can occasionally get destructive. I once saw a persistent dust devil on the Serengeti Plains in East Africa, that was probably close to F0 intensity. I bet dust devils are found on Pandora as well, but the dense vegetation and higher humidity there probably makes them less common.

Irayo. nìtxan ma 'eylan!  :D :D :D

Yes, I have always loved weather since I was five years old :) :)
I bet that dust devil was neat to see, I love getting to see different weather in different areas :) There really are so many possibilities when it comes to Pandoran weather, such as the affect the floating mountains may have on its jet stream( again making some assumptions) or if they exist in regions where there are higher winds, but I could keep going and going. It would be so cool to see the weather from standing on a floating mountain :D

Awesome weather discussion going on here! It's inside the /Introductions board though, where others are quite unlikely to find it and join in, if looking for a weather discussion. I think if we go any further than this, it might be a cool idea to move this stuff into a more obvious place to continue. :)

Wind12

My apologies, I will find the proper area and post some of those thoughts there :)
