Complete word derivation list revisited
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:14:46 am »
Kaltxì ma smuk!

Ezy and me had the idea to order the Na'vi words by generations to make them easier to learn, i.e. you'd first learn all the root words and then the derived words. Combined with the frequency dictionary, this would allow us to create a better learning resource and give people new to Na'vi a very easy start. I'll make another topic for that when results are looking good.

I refined my word derivation script a bit. It is now the ugliest thing I've ever seen (e.g. logic with unicode etc. - you don't want to hear the rest), therefore I better not let you burn your eyes by posting it. Instead I'll send you the results in CSV format.

The first column is the word itself, then the derivatives as given in the Na'vi Dictionary are listed and then the algorithmically generated inflections, like sä- or -pe+. To distinguish them easier, word derivations and inflections are separated with a colon. It can happen that there are entries both from the dictionary and the algorithm.

At some points the program fails. Wub. Especially the -e and -a- suffix/prefix is a often enough incorrect. For example, 'itan and 'ite are based on 'it with ending -an and -e. I'd need to correct that manually. Are you able to find other errors that should be fixed, besides those from -a-, -an and -e?

I hope you can help me by quickly scrolling through the list and help me a bit :)
If I make errors, don't hesitate to correct me.

Ah so you're in on doing this affix-parsing with software too eh? I've had some success with Fwew recently. (See the Gallery) but I've only started with verbs so far. Next will be handling nouns (nightmare for eltu lefngap)

As for the entire project idea here: actually a very good idea. It is IMMENSELY helpful to know etymology and word derivatives. It helps understand and solidify learning new words that you may not have known were derived from pre-existing words.

I totally agree.
