These are so fun and really help out with vocabulary. I definitely had a "Click!" lightbulb-turning-on moment when I realized that tìng mikyun and tìng nari (for to listen and to look at) sort of derive from "give ear", "give eye", that sort of thing. (Not exactly, but you know what I mean.) If it wasn't for these activity sheets I never would have seen that!

Irayo,
Kayrìlien

Thank you! Try this: More root concepts. In English we have "who, what, when, where, and how."

Na'vi simplifies all of that: We have "what." Sounds exciting--right? Well, once you get to know it, it actually is! You see, once you know the root word for "what" you can figure out (what) to attach it to, depending on (what) you want to ask. Please look!

What--person ("Who"): tupe "Who/Tupe ate my donut?!!"

What--thing ("What"): 'upe "What/'upe is that you're eating?" (A donut?)

What--action ("What"): kempe "What/Kempe are you doing?!"

What--time ("When"): krrpe "Exactly when/krrpe did I give your permission to yom my donut?"

What--place ("Where"): tsengpe "Where/tsengpe did you get that donut mister?"

What--reason ("Why"): lumpe "Why/lumpe did you think you could yom my donut?"

and finally:

What--way, manner, or method ("How"): fyape "How/fyape did you plan on getting away with this criminal act?"

Did you notice all of the pe's?

That is the commonality, the root to look for. It can appear at the beginning or the end of the word (fyape or pefya), but I prefer the pe coming at the end of the word, so you can see what the prefix (first part of the word is). Examples:

Tseng(e) is defined as "place" in the dictionary. tsengepe is "what place?" or "where?". See? It all fits together.

Fya is defined in the dictionary as "direction or path" but I see it more as "way" because "How" (fyape) is "what _____?". "What path does not exactly match up with "how," but "what way" does match up with "how," and it ALSO matches up with path or direction. But that is off topic. The point is that pe is your commonality for the whole who, what, when, where, why, and how thing (in Na'vi).

Try thinking of Na'vi as a modular language (like a modular house--where pieces are pre-formed and you can mix and match pre-made windows and walls and roofs to design your custom house). You have a ready made word and you can alter it. Chinese has a word for everything. But that is a LOT of words to learn. English changes some words (run becomes ran in the past tense) but it also has completely different words (eat becomes ate--not very modular). Na'vi gives you a lot of base words you can add prefixes or suffixes to, or even infixes (as in: "inside the word" -fixes). This is a generality and not an authoritative diatribe on everything Na'vi. But thinking about it this way will help you a LOT in learning new words, and understaning how the whole gramar thing works.

Get it? :)

Hope it helped! Oel ngati kameie, oel ngati meuia(ei goes in there somehere but there is no "last consonant"). And I thank you

Nice!
but a little notice about pe- doing lenition should be good.

Is meuia a verbs?

irayo is a noun:
you can say shortly: ngaru irayo
or in full: oe ngaru irayo seiyi

Ah yes! You got me! Irayo is defined as a "noun"! I am just in from work and rushing about to do laundry and read posts before bed (long day). My mistake! I will edit that out now. (gak!) Trying to do too many things at once. my brain can't handle it all!

Oh, wow, that actually helped a LOT. I did notice the "pe" in all of the question words; the modularity of the language is basically what makes it somewhat simple to learn. It's the easiest way (for me at least) to come up with a complete thought rather than just sitting there trying to memorize words.

I'm working on that last Mystery Word puzzle right now...trying to do it without looking at the dictionaries or anything like that is rather hard (but still way more fun than the homework I have for reinforced concrete design...).

Irayo (again),

Mewbaraue

Thanks for making this. (No I'm not good enough to say that in Na'vi yet)
I like this book. Very much too. It's taught me quite a few things already :D

But I've found some mistakes (well, they seem like mistakes to me anyways):

  • 1. Page 5.
I'd suggest that you check the spelling of the first Mystery Word puzzle. As it is spelled now, it doesn't exist in the dictionary. Letter nr. 5 seems to be wrong.
  • 2. Page 15-16.
Check the word bank in the "Where do I belong?" 'puzzle'. "Sreu" (dance) seems to be there two times. Of course I don't know if this is done on purpose or not ;)
Now I don't know if these are mistakes or not, but now I've at least told you about them.

Keep working on this please. I like doing these puzzles :D
Who I am?

I'm someone who was discarded, someone who has risen with a vengeance, I'm an avenger and a destroyer, I'm a protector I am a murderer, I'm a provider and a thief. I'm the hunter and the hunted, heartless and a conscience. Forgotten and a reminder. I live but I don't exist, I'm a brother, I'm an orphan. I'm famous but invisible, I'm good and I'm evil. I'm the same as I was, I'm completely different. I'm dead, I'm alive. I'm here and I'm not.

Cookie for pointing out mistakes! I am working on this, but redoing the format a bit. Sorry for the delays. Yeah, page 15-16 are part of a set of documents that cannot be edited (I can create, but not edit pdfs once they are set), so when the new version comes out, these will all be fixed. And teh spellings of words has changed, including the combining of consonant clusters into on "letter," which is making a LOT of sense. Ts is no longer t s, but now seen as one "letter." This makes all kinds of sense as Na'vi is an oral language, and e humans have had to write it down (so we either needed to invent a new character or jam two letters together that "sounded right"--which we did). In the puzzles I originally was treating them as individual letters. I have had to completely realign my thinking on this. Not a huge task, except when you are making activity books :-)

Ma Kaltxì Palulukan,

After making a worksheet on clauses for the community I can only imagine how much time you put into this thing.  Thanks for your tireless efforts in making Na'vi more accessible to the world.  +1 karma.

Irayo. Please stay tuned. I am working on something that will make this workbook look like a "toss away idea" by comparison. In the meantime, I will endeavor to create new (fun) pages.

Lol! Thank you. I write "how to books." My trademarked instructional series is titled "The Easiest Way to (subject)---EVER!!"

I got tired of "books for dummies" that made me feel like a "complete idiot" when I got lost. And they are boring. So I started my own line, and am looking for new authors all the time.

Okay, I will try to come out with a completely new (and improved) version of this guide by Monday. (Wish me luck!) :)

Okay, got 6 hours of work on the book in tonight. I keep getting new ideas at work, and I have to scribble them down on scratch paper. So this will not be ready for at least a few more days--maybe a week. looks like about 30-40 pages of all new material, 5-6 pages of old material, and some people have been kind enough to contribute their projects--for which they will get massive credit, so that people know who to thank. I will try to get in at least 12 hours of work on this Saturday and Sunday. It will look pretty much the same, but with a better organization, and much more focus on word usage.  Thanks everyone for your patience.

:)

Wow man, im very impressed with the continual labor on your part for this. To those who have contributed to this as well, thank you, you are helping many people learn at an understandable baseline level they can work upwards from. A good foundation like the one that this project provides is essential to building a larger and proper vocabulary :D Your all awesome.

It seems I may just finish the 2.0 version of the activity book right before you publish the latest incarnation.  Thanks Dusty

Feb 6 SPECIAL UPDATE: The official release of the "Learn Na'vi the Easy way" fun activity book is almost here. I have a few more days (about 20 more pages) I want to include. I am working 4-8 hours a day on this. I need some brave soul to try this thing out (set <--- "now") if you please (<---S'il vous plaît). It is the same form and structure, but new games, puzzles, and worksheets. I would like to find any obvious errors before it gets out to everyone next week, so if you want to sharpen your Na'vi skills, please let me know--pronto. Thanks

:)

I actually have a free evening tonight (which for people in my major is an EXTREMELY rare occurrence) and I'm always looking for more ways to improve my Na'vi, so I'd be happy to test this out for you. Hopefully my vocabulary is good enough that I can actually see errors, if they exist.

My email address is [email protected] (yes, really).
