Idea: Make a poster with all Na'vi words

I found EyzRider's idea to create a poster where all current Na'vi words are shown very interesting. When you learned a bunch of new words, you can mark those with a highlighter, that way you can always see your progress.

It's also a pretty good thing as decoration, IMO :)

What do you think?

Assuming there are 1995 words, we could make a 21x95 grid, perhaps mark the 93 flora&fauna words differently.

EyeOfPython

Does it have to be a grid? I would prefer full justification, that way there are no extremely large gaps

Wouldn't with a grid, while marking new words, the visual coverage closer represent the studied words' proportion?

EyeOfPython

Yes sure, but first word lengths can be between 1 and 10 characters, therefore a lot of space would be wasted. Also, it would look rather ugly with all those gaps. Further, if I learn a long word, that in some way signifies that I had more progress than learning a short one, therefore it should be OK that varying word lengths are to be highlighted. I also would most certainly not highlight the empty space in front/behind a word (because I'm lazy), therefore the highlighting will not represent the progress again.

Well, in the case of English, learning "and" will give you much more progress, than "floccinaucinihilipilification" :)
Otherwise, I see your point.

It's interesting and good idea. It can be really nice decoration or "progress indicator" .

The first try of the poster. There are still a lot of issues, though:
- Ordering: As you can see, the words are not ordered according to the Na'vi alphabet. Should be easy to fix, though. Also, as EzyRider pointed out, we could split the words into categories, leaving flora and fauna in a separate category, for instance. Still, I would highly recommend to sort by the Na'vi alphabet within a category so that one can find a word quickly.
- Word set: I just dumped all the words from the Na'vi front page, perhaps we want to choose other words, e.g. excluding city names or including flora.. Should be discussed.
- Font: I'm pretty much a LaTeX noob, therefore I struggle to set a correct font size as well as a nice suitable font... If someone knows some TeX, then some help would be amazing :)
- Spacing: Currently, 2mm. That should be fixed along with the font.
- Title, frame, other decorations...: If someone has ideas how to make the poster prettier, post it! I imagine some faint Pandora scenery in the background or something.

I added the .tex file as well, and the Python script that generates that .tex file.

I have only ever used LaTeX once, so I can't help with that. But changing the font size to use the whole page would certainly be a good idea.
As for the background, I'm not sure if everybody here wants to make it immediately obvious they're hardcore Avatar fans (or is it just me that wants to hide it?) :) Also, it could make marking the words more difficult, if it weren't faint enough maybe?

It would be probably the best solution. (for easy finding)

HRH ... hardcore fans.
For function of decoration poster, faint Pandora scenery in the background would be very nice.
But for funkcion of "progress indicator", marking of the words on background would be really more difficult.

Would be no problem to make multiple versions. How about the word list? Would you change it?

Wllìm

I tried changing the layout:

  • the poster now has A1 size, so \tiny isn't needed anymore to fit everything on one page;
  • I changed the font to Alegreya;
  • I added coloured "blobs" around the words.

About the blobs: for me this looks much better than just a list of plain words, but it will make marking the words you've learnt less easy. Perhaps we can try changing the blob colour based on the word class (noun, verb, adjective, ...)? That would need to be added to the word list, though.

About the word list: that seems correct, but I'd change all "smart quotes" (' and '; tiftang1 and tiftang2 in the code) by just apostrophes ('). As far as I know that is the usual way to write the tìftang :)

Toliman

Ma Wllìm, with this "blobs" around the words poster looks interesting  :). But is true, that making of learned words will less easy.
Maybe do this "blobs" more fainted?

Maybe would be interesting two versions:
1) Without blops around the words but with faint Pandora scenery background (as decoration poster)
2) With very faint blops around the words and withouth Pandora scenery background (learning version for marking of learned words)

EyeOfPython

Wow, thanks Wllìm! I integrated your changes and put them and my code in this github repository:
https://github.com/EyeOfPython/navi-poster
For further changes, just make a pull request (I could also add you as a contributor, if you want)

I fixed the sorting, it was indeed no problem. The template is now in a separate tex-file.

I thought it would be a crazy, impossible idea, but since I saw the poster, I find it cool.

Support for word types and word groups was added, i.e. every word now has a word type and optionally a word group. However, I don't know how to properly change the appearance of the blobs - could you do that, Wllìm? I pushed the new version on Github.

I would also distribute the words in full justification, so that the words appear as large block.

Apparently, we gained some words as well.

Okay, I'll do that tomorrow :)

Blue Elf

Interesting work :)
I would be interested in decorative version - words with some Avatar related background and mixed order (not alphabetical, preferably random).
