Learn Na'vi the Easy Way: Corrections
« on: June 09, 2011, 12:33:58 pm »
Kaltxì my aysmuk!  :)

After posting in a [not so] recent thread about the issues I had with some of the puzzles in the Learn Na'vi book, and when I had the idea to make a thread about it, I was encouraged by a few people.  Such is the point of this thread.

KP and the other contributors did a great job on making the learning material, but we are all human and do make mistakes.  I hope I am not being too bold in bringing attention to this, but my OCD just got the better of me.  May I ask the moderators to sticky this thread?

I will continually check back and add to this first post the corrections that people find.  So please keep your menari out for new stuff to be added here, as I go along.

Corrections so far:
Na'vi Word Search #1: FTAWNEMKRR ; TìNG TSENG [the closest match was ting seng, which feels like it should have an accented ì and a 't' by the 's' in seng]
Na'vi Word Search #2: FPìL ; TìSTI [found TISTI, no accented ì...]
Na'vi word Search #3: LETSRANTEN

That is all so far!  Keep checking back for updates.

Irayo,
Kir'ti

I kinda second this, and moreover I cannot support the book further until it is corrected.  The concept is txantsan, however if it's going to get out there, I would appreciate it being genuine.

Also if you want a fuller list of the errors, I could post it here, although KP should already know about this.

Are you referring to the first workbook, or the new one?

The new one.  The first one has been deprecated in favor of the new one.

If you have a list of errors, then please post them here, ma 'Oma Tirea.  I will put them up, and continue moving along as I see more errors.  Now that we have a new book, there shouldn't be as much rush, but this will be at least a guide to those who are working with the new workbook.

Then, once I complete the book myself, I will post all the errors to KP myself.

Recently I took this workbook again and did some exercises. What mistakes I found:
- page 10: kop is here used in meaning of "too", but it means "additionaly"
- page 14: nong in word bank is unused
- page 16: pähem and makto are missing in word bank
- page 17: stxong is four-letter word, not five-letter

Also some diphthongs (aw/aw/ay/ay) aren't really diphthongs; if y/w is surrounded from both sides by vowel, it isn't diphthong (like in fnawe', rewon, layon etc). It makes word to be one letter longer than mentioned

Indeed this was the main recurring issue.  In fact a phonotactical rule was violated by considering the ew in 'ewll a diphthong!  Interestingly enough, though, there was a case or two where the ay diphthong was separated into two letters for irayo, where normally they're supposed to be a diphthong irayo had no mistakes ;D

According dictionary "ay" in irayo is diphthong: [i.ˈɾaj.o] But according Wiki you are right: [i.ˈɾa.jo]

So what is correct? I must notify dictionary boys

Okay... Finished only first exercise so far... Still can't find three words... Ftawnemkrr, Tìng tseng and Utraltsyìp (the closest is Utraltsyìw - marked with green colour)...
And also I've found "yawme" which can be changed easily into "yawne" (marked with red colour) :) Link to photo of my monitor is below (Yes. I was too lazy to print it. :D Whiteboard markers+CRT monitor ftw)

Here is the link to the photo.

See the first post, these words are missing. Utraltsyìp probably should exist, I don't remember that I wasn't able to find it, but I'll try to check it again ...

Only first book (The Easiest Way to Learn Na'vi - EVER!!) is done, can be downloaded on download page. Work on other books didn't start and I'm afraid this idea is dead for now.... :(

I was (and still am) planning on creating a new workbook, one that will teach some of the basic grammatical aspects of Na'vi without getting too linguistic.

Kaltx   'Oma Tirea,
I noticed that your word for the day means present in English. Is that as "gift", or "in the present time"?

Present time.  It comes from set and krr.
You too can have this "Na'vi Word of the Day" sigbar :) Copy and paste the following line into your signature.  Go to Profile → Forum Profile Information → Signature.

Okay... I'm going back to the topic... :D Page 32: 2-Letter Words exercise... One of them, the word bank or lines shouldn't be in the same order... Then it's just first in the word bank to the first line, second word to the second line, etc... Irecomend to shuffle that lines... :) Word bank can be ordered alphabetically, but that lines shouldn't. :)

This occurs on all exercises of this type. I think. I reported it during checking, but my note wasn't taken into account. :(
