Massive Context Bold Flashcards
« on: June 08, 2014, 12:08:20 am »
What are MCBs?

Massive Context Bold flashcards, or MCBs, are flashcards that highlight words in a sentence, which you have to guess the meaning of. They are useful for learning vocabulary and sentence structure (grammar).
You can read more about them here: What are MCBs?

Here are some screenshots of them in Anki:

How do I use them?

As JeffBen explains on his website:
  • Look at the bolded word on the card. If you know the word, mark the card as remembered.
  • If you aren't sure what the meaning is, try to read the rest of the sentence. If you figure it out by doing this, mark it as remembered.
  • If you cannot figure out the meaning, look at the answer, and mark the card as missed.

What do I do with the MCB file?

You can import these files into Anki. The import settings look like this:

Once you have loaded them into Anki, it is possible to sync them with a free AnkiWeb account to study them online.

There is also AnkiApp, although I have not used it.

You can try other programs as well. You will need to look up that program's instructions on how to import CSV files. Make sure the settings are as follows:
  • Use basic, Front-and-Back cards.
    • The First field is Front.
    • The Second field is Back.
  • Fields are separated by semicolon. (This character: ; )
  • The program must allow HTML.

If you know of other programs that these work in, please let me know and I will post a link to it.

Ubuntu! :D Na'vi Flashcards! :D

Seems pretty cool. I wonder if there's a way to use them on a Chromebook/Chrome Browser or do I have to drop to dev mode and use crouton again to install Ubuntu and Anki?

Oh! I didn't know you could upload documents and files to the gallery. This looks like a much better option. Irayo ma Tìtstewan! :)

The flashcard files themselves aren't program-specific, so I imagine you could use them with any flashcard program that can import CSV files. As long as the program understands HTML formatting, it should be fine. Anki just happens to be the one I use, but I know of others like jMemorize and SuperMemo.

There is also AnkiWeb, a free online verson of Anki that you could use on Chrome, although its page says you need the computer version to upload shared decks... I don't use the online version, so I wouldn't know if you could get that to work. The cards don't have media or anything, they're just plain text, so they should work fine in AnkiWeb if you can get them in there.

There must be a program somewhere that you could use with ChromeOS, even an online one. All it needs are those two things I mentioned: Can import CSV files, can interpret HTML formatting.

Sadly I tried to upload an csv file to the gallery, but it didn't allow me; said it was an invalid file or something. I've decided to try using Dropbox.

I didn't notice your question at the bottom. (When I see a horizontal line, I guess my brain thinks its a signature.)

I'm not sure what you mean by HTML file. What do you intend to use it for?

Do you mean this:
An Error Has Occurred!
The file has a invalid extension
Hmm, I thought, the gallery would upload such .csv files...
I will ask Markì about that. (Now I'm curious which file extension the gallery supports)

A quick solution would be to put these files in a .zip file.

Edit:
DropBox is also an option.

Edit 2:
I found the list...
Allowed File types:
  • Image files: bmp, png, gif, jpg, jpe, jpeg
  • Audio files: mp2, mp3, mpga, ram, ra, wax, wma, m4p, m4a, a-latm, ogg, rpm, mka, wav
  • Video files: 3gp, 3g2, avi, mpg, mpeg, mpe, wmv, mxu, m4u, movie, qt, mov, rm, rmvb, rv, flv, f4v, mp4, m4v, mkv
  • Documents: txt, rtf, pdf, xls, doc, ppt, docx, xlsx, pptx, xml, html, htm, php, css, js, zip, rar, ace, arj, 7z, gz, tar, tgz, bz, bzip2, sit
  • Multimedia archives: zipm

I mean a list as html for the browser. :)

Hmm... I might do zips. What I like about Dropbox is it might let me update the files (with fixes, other changes) without changing the links. (Not sure if that will work, since I haven't tried it yet... but would be nice nonetheless, if I can get it to work.)

I understand what an HTML/webpage is, and I could create them, but I'm wondering what you want that for. Are you thinking of using this to copy-paste the lists into programs? I wonder if that would work...

I thought about to have a list with Frommers sentences (as you created for Anki) for the browser1 or just as a file.
Something like this:

Na'vi sentenceTranslationLiteral translation
Nìfrakrr fol ’olem a wutso ftxìvä’ lu nìngay. As always, the dinner they cooked tasted really terrible. As always, the dinner which they coocked, tasted really terrible.
etc.etc.etc.

1Your files contains some html codes, that's why I asked originally for a html list. :)

One could write a script which takes Kame's file as input and generates your desired html file as output. ;)

Here's what my files would look like in an HTML table:
[smg id=5524 type=av]

I'll post them along with the MCB files, if anyone would find them useful.

If I open that html file with FireFox, I see there is a little code problem.
There should be used UTF-8 codes.

Edit:
I think the file need a line which force the browser to use UTF-8. If I use the stuff directly from the file to the this forum, it looks nice. Weird technology...

AgggGGHHHH! This isn't the first time I've dealt with problems like this. It's so dumb that computers still have trouble displaying foreign-language characters in this day and age. *Kame tears nikre sneyä out*

I found a tag that should force it into UTF-8, and it looks good to me now when I load it in Windows. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you:

It looks great! I'm still wondering why that code problem happens? I mean, I wrote e.g. the pronoun guide in html and in that file is no code which force UTF-8. Weird...

EDIT:

I looked in the old file, I tested a bit and I did following: I opened it with the simple windows note pad and there everything looks normal - no weird signs UTF-8 was enabled. I just copied it into another note pad windows and save it (used UTF-8) and it works without any problem. I guess there was a problem somewhere with the save?

I don't know, it's all so convoluted. I'm not a web developer, and as long as it's working I'm happy. I've read that HTML5 uses UTF-8 by default, so that's good.

By the way, some good news for anyone hoping to use Anki on ChromeOS: According to this article, ChromeOS will run Android apps in the future. That means you guys could download the Android version of Anki. I don't know when they plan to do this, but if they do, it'll be great.

I feel a little bad that I haven't finished making these. I've stopped using them myself, but I wonder if others might still want to use them.

I've been thinking about changing their format, though. I wonder whether the 1:1 translation is really helpful. Sometimes I think it is more confusing. Also, from what I understand, the translation was supposed to be shown on the front to help read it.

Here's what they look like now:

I wonder if I should do this instead:

This provides only the information they need for that specific word, without bothering them about the rest (like the 1:1 cards). I also think it provides better immersion. In fact I wonder if the 1:1 cards might hurt aynumeyu by encouraging them to translate to English instead of just understanding the Na’vi.

I worry that my 1:1 translations aren't that good anyway. They can be hard to do, and sometimes I'm not sure which way to translate something.
