what do you all think of creating the questions, translating them into Na'vi AND THEN putting them into the text-book. so people would have to translate the question before they can answer it....

thoughts anyone....?
That could work, but it goes back to the issue of presenting options: Some students might enjoy deciphering the questions they have to answer. Other students may prefer straight-forward English/native-language questions.

So I suppose the bigger question is: What options would you like to offer your readers?
  • Do you want to give them as many learning options as possible? If so you should include both: The questions in English and Na’vi so they can choose for themselves.
  • Or do you want the book to force a certain amount of "immersion" on them? In that case, only present the questions written nìNa’vi.

Also consider this: If you write these questions nìNa’vi, do you expect your readers to look up the words in the dictionary or figure them out from context, or will you present all of the words used in these questions beforehand to make it easier for them to understand?

Since this is your textbook, it's really up to you.

Perhaps most importantly, you need to think of yourself: This is obviously a very big project you've taken on. I'm sure you'd like to use everything including the kitchen sink from the get-go. But it might be wiser to work out a basic textbook and build up from there: Get your materials together, put together something that's basic but workable, and then add more details and things later as you go along. Start with basic learning materials and activities, and we can consider other, more advanced materials (like questions written nìNa’vi) later. We can work out a list of ideas we'd like to try/do, but we don't have to do them all in the "first printing."

But again, that's up to you.

May I ask what programs and tools you're using to help organize all of this?
"Your work is to discover your world, and then with all your heart give yourself to it."

Kaltxì

well first off:
I don't want to force the Na'vi to immerse and learn, I don't want them forced. So I'll put both English and Na'vi questions. Good idea.

secondly:
When it comes to questions, I would like them to figure it out, without using the dictionary's if possible, but I know a lot of people will need to, so I will represent the words and phrases before hand if possible, to help them along.

also, I don't really think of this as MY textbook. I'm not exactly doing anything of manor importance. I'm just.... a gatherer, I group all of the information that we have and I'm simply bringing it together. So whatever decisions are made, I would like to think involves everyone devoted to this project.

thirdly:
I agree, this is a very large undertaking. I haven't begun off very easily, but I am taking it part by part by part. one chapter at a time, one page at a time, it sounds like it shouldn't take so long, but it is.

unfortunately, there has been a bit of a mishap recently, where a portable device carrying all my Na'vi information was broken and I lost it all, so I must go and collect all the information all over again, before I can rebegin the creation of the text-book. it upset me a great deal, but I do promise to catch up to where I was. I will work hard.

I greatly agree with the idea of starting off basic and adding materials, once I retrieve all the information, I will do that first. thank-you for the advice.

as for the programs It's more or less like a scrapbook.
I'm using very basic programs to begin with. eg. word, photoshop, clip-cut, excel, notepad, one-note, publisher, snipping tool, powerpoint. etc.

overall. thank-you for all the wonderful advice.. Keep on giving it if you have any other ideas. I'd love to hear them. :)

I perhaps realise that such a large undertaking is extremely difficult especially, if I'm not doing much.... :0
I was wondering perhaps if there were someone who would be willing to help me form the basic structure of the chapters, I need a bit of help. I have 6 weeks of school holidays in which to thoroughly get this project well and truly off the ground any who are interested, please send me a message or reply to this. either way.

I've edited this comment to add the chapter content, and to say that I'm working on two separate chapters, whereas there are still some chapters I cannot begin since the community doesn't actually have much if any information for some areas.
feel free to tell me what you think.

Kaltxi ma frapo ma soaia

As you all know, for the past several months, the ‘Mega Na’vi Booklet’ project has been going on.
What some or most of you don’t know, is that due to things like
-   Loss of information
-   Broken technology
-   School
-   Family matters
-   Personal matters
-   Or other
This project has been unable to successfully further past the very beginning of the project. This entails only the beginnings of several chapters, the title page, the back of the book, index, introduction, chapters & content along with a still ongoing list of contributors and sources/materials being used in this project being done.

I know I will have had help from several of you, which I am greatful for. However, and I say this as modestly as possible because none of this could have happened without the help of a lot of you, since this was essentially a project that (and I hate to say this due to sounding selfish or self important) I came up with, most of the work and progress has fallen to me. I have not argued this in the past, I don’t argue this now, however, as my final year of school progresses, my HSC exams come up, assignments and homework and all manner of personal problems crop up, I am unable to regularly continue this project so diligently.

To my utter disgrace, and this is by no fault of anyone in the Na’vi community except myself, I have been forgoing school work and risking grades so I can work on this project every day.

I have had conversations with several of you about this and have decided to ask for help.

So for any of you out there who read this, who are not too busy and who would be willing to lend a hand, I would be eternally greatful for help in several different major and minor areas of the project.

I will be uploading the second to last copy of the chapter content so you can see what this project involves so far for your benefit, if interested. (this chapters & content has been beta'd and modified by the wonderful Alyara Arati, shout-out to her, she's been completely amazingly helpful, and she's beginning to tutor me in Na'vi, so double yay.)

If you are interested, please PM me, or reply to this post.

For those of you already helping with the project, I will be contacting you soon.

What I noticed…

Kaltxì ma frapo oeru soaia => you probably mean oeyä “my”?

oeru ma tsmukan, ulte ma tsmuke => “to me, brother and sister”, you probably also mean oeyä “my”, then, the order is the same as the English “O my brothers and sisters” ma oeyä smukan sì smuke

Oeru syaw 'ewan newey
Oeru syaw Tstewa Ikrantsyìp

rutxe srungit oel Kìyin => kin is transitive, so you need the L and T ending.
fpi oe leNa'via puk tìkangkemvi  => since the adjective describes the noun (a Na’vi book project), a is attached to the adjective.

LeNa'via tìkangkemvi oe za'u ulte kame
ulte

Oe layefpom talun tìtsunslu nga za'u ulte kame oe puk LeNa'via  tìkangkemvi => “I will be happy” = ’ayefu oe nitram, lefpom is an adjective, there are not infixes in adjectives, I’m not sure what you mean with the second part of the sentence from taluna … onwards.

Ma Tstewa Ikrantsyìp,

as we’ve already discussed, I am willing to help with the questionaire that you planed for the end of each chapter. I cannot really do more than that. It is your project and if I understood correctly you wanted to collect everything that’s out there (learning material, explanation etc.) That’s more a case of collecting and sorting than writing, right?

Best ulte hayalovay :)

I looked into revised document and it is very huge. Probably it would not be bad idea to split project into more books (Na'vi, language, etc), so work becomes less difficult.

Some chapters (1, 8 and leter) can be taken from public sources, like pandorapedia, so here probably you do not need so much help (but pandorapedia says, that its content can't be copied etc.etc, so I'm not sure how to deal with this)
Other chapters about language could be taken from Lì'fyateri leNa'vi project, but it is in infancy and it will take long time to complete. But something can be taken from currently available materials and perhaps I could help a little here, although I have not so much free time. Try to precise more some language related chapter, I'll see what I can do.

Also, consider what should be output of the project. Just one thick book? How do you attach audio samples? Maybe something like website would be more appropriate (not only web somewhere on the net, it could be local site written to CD/DVD, so extra files like audio, graphic, videos etc. can be easily included. More over - external sources, which can't be directly included - like copyrighted content aka pandorapedia - can be just linked. This could make work be even easier).

A wiki could contain all these materials, but it wouldn't work offline.

--Actually now that I think of it, there are some offline/personal-wiki projects, but I've never used these and I don't know if you can distribute your own wikis to other people. (This page lists a few.)

what you see there will be the basis of the Flora & Fauna chapter.
each beast and plant will have either 2 or 3 pages for each one.
I've counted all the plants and Beasts that we know of and I've done the math.

we have
Animals -> 37
Plants -> 71

if each animal and plant gets 2 pages the chapter will be:
Pages: 216 (that's not including the chapter title page, the chapter index, the activities or the end chapter quizzes)

If each animal and plant gets 3 pages each, the chapter will be
Pages: 314 (that's not including the chapter title page, the chapter index, the activities or the end chapter quizzes)

if we get a series of mixture where some have 2 pages and some have three, it will end up finishing somewhere in-between those two numbers.
P.S the Flora & Fauna Chapter is almost complete.

P.P.S I need some help regarding the Pawl Karyu chapter. if someone would be so kind as to be willing to help me out. this chapter is going to be either the biggest, or the second biggest in the book and so needs a lot of work, and I can't do it on my own.

P.P.P.S I also need some help in other sections as well.
I will be posting a list of the areas where I need help, and so you can chose what you help with. :)

P.P.P.P.S thank-you to all those who have or are still helping. Thankyou to everyone for such support and advice. Thankyou for the help, the encouragement and a big huge massive thank-you to absolutely everything who is making this possible :)

Kaltxi ma Titstewan

my plan regarding this chapter is either going to be very complicated or very easy, it depends what happens in the next few weeks with what chapters and what progress....

it's unfortunate however that i have lost the rights to a series of information which i needed....

What I wanted to do, was include every single chapter.
But I've talked to a few different people and as you yourself advised it would be better if I only included the chapters that would be useful that pertained, were relevant, was connected, what was consistent or pertaining to this chapter in this project.

I was thinking that i could get somebody to go through the list of posts and give me a list that would be useful not just for this project, but in the book as a whole.

this is the first idea:
so if there was something in the grammar chapter, that could be answered in the Paul Karyu chapter, i could put a reference in grammar chapter on that page that if so chosen to they could go to that page and have their answer to the question or whatever.

this is the second idea:
we cut and paste certain parts of certain posts into multiple different areas of the project so it doesn't have to be referenced at all, it's right there in the same area so that all that's needed is to read it.... but that would take alot of work, and as a result of it being referenced we would hve to leave that chapter till very last..... since the book is still in it's infant stage and we don't know absolutely everything that will being in it, so we don't know what we'll reference and therefore don't know what to cut up and reorganise and place and such...

ideas anyone?..

As for the Na'viteri thing. There is the question how to define "what is important and what not", which means also the comments of the blog, because there are some important comments by Pawl. Also, you don't need to do so much regarding the Na'viteri part, because I have them as a file and if you are using MS Office 2010, I can give you a copy of it, and you could work with these files.

Another option would be to re-write each blog and write the importand things only, but this will need a lot of work and time...

that was what I was thinking... I think it would need more than one person though, which is why I didn't mention it, im trying to keep this project as uncomplicated as possible. but if say perhaps 2 or three people were willing to help, id be happy to focus on doing that for the next 3 or 4 weeks....

but I need some volunteers for this...
obviously I wouldn't rewrite everything, some quotes and examples and such would be kept...

Kaltxì ma frapo, ma oeyä soaìa

I’ve written a list below of all the chapters that are in this project. Each chapter needs attention. The point of this is that if you want to help, you can choose which area you want to help with, and what you can do, most people don’t know what they can do to help, this way you have an idea of what has to be done and where it is and you might have ideas for any different areas.

I’ve uploaded the chapters and content, even if you don’t have any time to help, or if you don’t know what to help with or whatever your reasons are, if you look through this an just have a random idea for one of the chapters for any random area, you can message me or reply or anything.

If you do want to help, I will be making a list of people/s who are, have or will be helping or participating so if someone needs to know who’s doing what, they can look at that list, that will be in the next post.

I will also be uploading (in this post) the list of people and materials used, being used, or will be used. If you see something you don’t agree with, if you’ve helped and your name isn’t there, if there’s a material you think you should be there, or really anything at all, then again, reply, or post or anything to get my attention.

The reason I’m doing all of this is because I’m studying for my final exams for year 12, plus I have assignments, homework and extra-curricular studies, not to mention a large list of other things I’m working on. Id appreciate some help, but nobody has to or anything…

Uuum, I guess that’s it for now.
Oooh, also. In reference to the Pawl Karyu blog, I have decided what I’m going to do. Titstewan if you have time, or if you just want to hear what I’m thinking of, just give me a shout-out.

p.s. This post will also be copied. This post will be in “Mega Na’vi Booklet” and “Oe Kin Srung”

I am not quitting, let me make this crystal clear. apart from the MNB these things have also stopped.
- jewellery making
- PS3 & Xbox game playing
- fanfiction writing
- painting & drawing

what I am doing, is I am putting it on pause for a short while, as I am extremely busy with personal and family matters and studying for my final school exams, its taking a lot of concentration, and though I hate to say it, the mega Na'vi booklet, is one of multiple things on pause.

I will continue to do as much as possible, (which unfortunately will be little) through-out the next few weeks, but for the most part this project is on pause until the holidays in 3 weeks.

I apologise for any inconvenience, anyone who wants to keep working or doing anything, please message me, and we can talk about this...

P.S - I've just uploaded an attempt at the title page.  and I've uploaded the final version of the chapters & content. 2 things::
1. what do you think? of both the title page and content?
2. should the title be translated into Na'vi?

Ok, this is a notice.
The coming week is the last week of my school term.
That means that im bringing the Na’vi Mega Booklet challenge to life once again.
The entire two weeks of my holidays will be devoted to progressing this project.
As I said before, in some of my more recent posts, there is a list of the chapters in the project, each chapter needs progress, in different areas. This is for anybody who is interested, I intent to finish at least 3 chapters in the next two weeks.  I am going major time on this. Unfortunately due to personal reasons, concerning, myself, my family, school and the continuously changing situations in my life right now, the project itself has already been delayed and it’s finishing mark has been delayed as well. Instead of finishing it by the early months of next year, it might be delayed a bit longer, unfortunately. This is also depending on other subjects that are being completed as well.
For those people who are in charge, or leading, or even heading these projects, I will contact you in the next week, or you may contact me.
I’m asking for help, for anyone who doesn’t know what area they want to help in or what they can do, please Message me, we can find an area you are suited in, what you know, or how you can help.
This is only for interested persons, I do not want to unintentionally force anybody, or make anyone feel like they’re being coerced to help.

The list of chapters goes as follows.
Quote
Who are the  Na’vi?
Alphabet and Phonetics
Pronunciation & Dialectology
