Did this get anywhere?
I've been thinking of writing a Zork type game nìNa'vi (I've got an engine running with Java, to see if I could improve on the 1977 one ::)), anyone think they might be interested?
For those haven't heard of Zork:

I didn't feel like creating a whole new thread because this is just a thought, an idea.

What if we created a Learn Na'vi Board Game? ^________^

You can play as Jake, arriving at Pandora. For every step, someone reads a quest to you, and if you get it right you might get to take one step further, or get a word card- showing some small vocabulary that could help you further on in the game.

THAT is awesome. ;D

I could totally see playing that. And losing. But hey, it wouldn't take long to learn. ;)

When I was a kid, my mom bought me this learning software stuff, I'm not sure if it's still around. But it basically was a game where you had to like save the world or something like that and it basically used skills and stuff that you would learn at different game levels. I think it might be an interesting way to go, although it might be a bit on the kiddie side of things depending on how it's formatted.

What about something in 'The Game of Life' style?

I've been thinking about this again, and I think I have a design for a better engine that should be compatible with a range of platforms. Implementation is getting there, but I have very little time to work on interesting things.
I hope that by making the player comfortable by allowing them to use their native language, but pushing them to use Na'vi the game can gradually immerse people in the language. I think the parser should accept English but give much more useful answers if the player uses Na'vi as this should gently push them out of their region of comfort while remaining fun.
I'm thinking of the parser as a Neytiri-ish character; it can speak English acceptably but would really rather not!

I'd like some feedback, otherwise I'm likely to loose the motivation I need to get the system to work, and if/when the software does what I want I'll want writers who know Na'vi (I'm awful at telling stories, and my Na'vi is pretty mangled).

Wow! Serious necro!  ??? But it sounds like one that is allowed.

I am still interested in seeing you produce a game, especially if it challenges people to learn Na'vi or improve their skills.

My advice would be to build a flexible engine, and then start off with something relative simple. Complexity can be added with time.

Yes, that's more or less what I was thinking. I want to write an engine that can be ported easily as well as supporting a good deal of complexity.
I would really like to fix the illogical navigation mechanics in most interactive fiction and use something better.

Wou, it sounds interesting, even after one-year pause. Maybe I can help you with translations of texts. Not sure if I can develop some story, it needs inspiration, and it doesn't come too often :)

Human Scientists Studying Na'vi would be COOL. How about the Humans that were running the equipment, that were allowed to stay, and then found a way to gestate their own Avatars?
THEN, they would be allowed to KEEP them IF they learned the language and ways of the people. What do you think?

well its probably gonna be 3d platform style and not 2d so mario bros isn't a very good comparison. Plus it needs to have other aspects than platform, action, and arcade. It doesn't take 144 years to make a game btw. I just need some help planning so I have an idea of what it will be like.

There will be a problem: won't the game violate the copyrights?

I think it would... but is Na'vi itself copyrighted? Maybe it could be human-scientists studying Na'vi...

I have some friends who could design platforms for a 3d style game if you want. they use the UDK engine to do it, and it runs as a normal computer game. they need to do it for a programming class, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind helping you out. as for ideas, inspiration and a story line, I have a few, but I'll have to get back to you on those.  ;)
