Translating Taronyu's dictionary

Since I am kind of tired to copypaste this to every possible translator, this thread should give a quick overview about "How do I become a translator?" and "What is the translation interface like?".

First of all, we're speaking of Taronyu's dictionary, the probably most up-to-date dictionary for Na'vi out there (and, as I am aware of, the most translated). It's really easy to translate it since we've built a whole interface around it, including translating every word (which can then be used by Eana Eltu), some dictionary-specific things (the texts, titles), creating the dictionary. And all this is (more or less) usable by more than one - a whole group of people can work at translating the words at once.

Now, to translate the dictionary to any other language, we'd like you to think about it. It's a real bunch of work: 1500 words, 140 texts. And you should keep it up-to-date. Questions you should ask yourself:

  • Do you have time to translate it and maintain it? (it's not a *that* big effort since you'll see quickly what words have changed, but it can be overwhelming if you stop updating for a while)
  • Are you interested enough in Avatar/Na'vi to do it? (some translations are abandoned because the translators lost interest)
  • Do you speak English (the basic language for every translation) well enough to translate it?
  • Do you speak the language you would like to translate to well enough to translate it? (there is really no sense that you translate it and have (almost) no idea of the language you want to translate it into)

Of course, I (for the system) or Taronyu (for the content of the dictionary) can help you with the most problems.

Still interested? Read the first spoiler to see what you have to do in order to get access.

And now, as last point of this post, let's talk about the translation interface. As you can see, some fields are greyed out - they are given by Taronyu and cannot be changed. You can't change these fields, you can't change most of the dictionary's layout. We kind of want to have them to be consistent. This also means that you will have to have three dictionary (NaviDictionary_LANGUAGECODE.pdf, DictionaryNavi_LANGUAGECODE.pf and NaviCatDictionary_LANGUAGECODE.pdf), but this is done automatically by the system (assuming you have translated all necessary fields). The system will also generate localized TSV/jMemorize-files and, if your translation is about 95% and continuing, I'll add it manually to Eana Eltu, which will unlock your language in the translator and add all its data to the SQL file, which means that other applications may use your language then.

The translation process itself is field-by-field, means you translate field for field, not really knowing its context. You can generate the PDF as often as you want (as long as you have translated the required fields) and check what it looks like. You should understand TeX or at least be able to "avoid" it - you will often see things like \textbf{Foo} or {\it Foo} - you have to leave the \textbf{}/{\it} alone, as well as any possible $_FOO$ things. Do not translate the dollar sign. Do not translate "textbf" or "it". If you just "work around" it, it will be fine.

You can access a list of words that are not updated or outdated (decided by the system itself) - however, this is not a good thing to start with. Remember the 1500 words? Now let's say there are about 5 fields per word, means your browser has to process (and later send) about 7500 input fields. Starting the translation is best done using a silly search, for example, searching for "K" and translating all words that have K in it. You will get into the whole translation process quite quickly and with the additional information you get when you're about to translate it.

Example screen (blue is the field your cursor is in actually, it's an help) of one word (already translated to German, but outdated because of the green background - this picture is a bit old but it's still the same)

Kaltxì,

Mìhìl and I have since several months completed the Dutch translation for the dictionary, and we are keeping an eye on the updates and new words. So far, the dictionary is all translated, but for some obscure reason the PDF has not shown up on the downloads page of LN.

I had contact with Mark Miller about this and he said there is no PDF for DictionaryNavi_nl on http://eanaeltu.learnnavi.org/dic, only some other extensions (.jvs is one if I recall correctly).

Can someone please have a look? Is there a generator script that needs to be updated so the Dutch PDF is generated as well? It's a bit disappointing to keep updating a dictionary that never shows up.

Irayo.

The script is complete, if Dutch wouldn't be in the database you wouldn't be able to translate it.

As you can see if you run the script that creates the dictionary (you know you have to do that manually, right? It's up to you to generate it, there is no cronjob that does that) there is an error in your script. I think it says that pretty big and red. And the error message is shown to you as well, last time I checked. You had an additional '}' in the word with "met plezier". There are some other errors as well, it's no wonder your dictionary doesn't show up. Even if you built it, what I am sure you did not, it couldn't proceed because of all the errors in it and therefore there can't be a PDF.

Fixed.

Thanks Puvomum. Remember that all things after \  are commands, and to include both { }. But I'm sure you knew that and these were just mistakes. No problem at all to fix. Thanks again for translating! :D

You are more than welcome for the translation, and thank you for reminding me about the \ and the {}! I am glad it was easy to fix.
We'll keep our eyes on the translatable things and continue our work on it. ìvong na'vi! :)

Ma Taronyu,
are you planning to update the Na'vi-nìNa'vi - Dictionary?
If not, I'd like to do that.

:D Yeah, great idea. I wanted to ask that for so long. It would be so great if that project would continue.

...and now it seems like there's a greater sustenance of vocabulary to be able to accurately describe most of the Na'vi words using other Na'vi words.

Hmm. I wasn't planning on it, mostly because, as you may have noticed, I have no time these days.

But if you guys have time, you could work on it, if you like. Send me an email; if I think you're not a spam bot and you mention the Na'vi word for silence in the email, I'll see about letting you access it. :D

if i have some time that sounds fun to help out with. I like some of the joke definitions tho. if we can make that dictionary legit, I would advocate its use over the rest of the dictionaries for people with an established base vocab. using it would pretty much be an immersion experience of its own.

Well it took me long enough, but now that I know that the Dutch translation is there, I have put it on the downloads page on the main site. Sorry it took so long!  :-[

I have a request for the edit_vars page, not sure if I should drop that here.
Would it be possible to also have the name(s) of the translators listed there?

Kaltxì ma eylan,

I noticed just now that the Dutch dictionary (always the same ramble here, sorry ;) ) is not automagically updated/regenerated.

I've kept it up to date all the time, but the online version is 11.427 from 7 november 2010, where the English one is all fresh from 6 march 2011, version 11.803.

Irayo for looking into this.

I can see the Portuguese dictionary is a little bit out of date. I would help Artur translating it but I haven't seen him here... so, what must I do to translate the dictionary?
