So I'm in a media class right now and I'd like to do something Avatarish for one of my short films.  What sort of programs do i need to have or anything else to do it?

Well, for my part I like to use Windows Movie Maker very much to edit videos :) I believe you can download it for free on the internet. I guess it might not be the more professional alternative, but that's the one I know, and I think it's actually good because it's both simple to use and efficient.

and some trees.

Definitely going to need some trees...

If I recall correctly they used Adobe After Effects for the animations in Avatar (Exopack glass, Computer screens, holograms) and Adobe Premiere to render and edit it.

But yeah not many freeware or cheap software packages are available to replicate the effects used in Avatar.

Well my Media computer is a mac and we've got Photoshop, After effects (all the other adobe things I belive) and Final Cut Pro.  We also have other things like Soundtrack and Time Travel (?) So I have the programs, I'm just not sure how to use them all for this type of project.

Ah well then you are set, with those three software packages (photoshop, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro) you can do some pretty incredible things. This video was done using those three packages:

Gandalf Goes to the World Cup

and this one too:

Boyz N the Ring!

As for figuring out what to do, ditto on Ilisaqpuq suggestion to write it all on a storyboard to provide structure to your production. If you are after technical production related questions (how to get a specific effect on the software) youtube is an awesome resource on tutorials of how to do different things with the software. I am looking at quite a few tutorials on After Effects and Premiere I can apply some of the tips towards my own avatar related video productions (super secret stuff :P).

Hope that helps some. :D

Those videos made me laugh :P

Although unless you've got the programs at college or somewhere you have access to... you'll probably have to spend a bit of money on Software.

Let us know how it goes!

Or if you can tolerate one proprietary program, use Windows but replace "editing" with Windows Movie Maker.

Aye, the new Windows Movie Maker that comes bundled with Vista and 7 is awful.

Yes, I need more time to create the video version (still image + audio) of my music than making the actual song o0
