Please give us a report about your experience at WETA when you come back!  Details please!  Also, tell us whether they show off the real Warthog they built for the Halo 3 commercials...  I never get tired of hearing about it!  ;)  (Halo Dork Alert)

Post pictures :D
I sorry to say but photography and recording devices were not allowed inside the Auditorium

It was a good seminar to attend, for one I did not know that every single bit of jungle, water, mountain and alot of Hells Gates was completely computer generated, all the did was create the image used for the characters for example in the scene where Neytiri was about to shoot Jake with her bow but then seed from the sacred tree interveened, to get the image they wore suits to capture how the actors moved and all that stuff, just in an ordinary studio, once they had done that theyd upload the image onto a computer then digitaly create the background for via software, photoshop etc.

for the Ikran, they had James send drawings of what he wanted it to look like and theyd have to work on it, he was saying that the face of the Ikran and the way the jaw moves its like that of a deep sea creature and James got the idea from his deep sea diving, James baby in the move was the Thanator and he wanted the Na'vi to feline like in the expressions with the face ears and feadtures because hes a cat lover

The hardet character to make was "Jake Avatar" becase he had to get every little bit of Sam Worthingtons facial expressions onto the Avatars body and face so theyd end up with over 76 muscles used in just a basic smile.

On ser they had 900 people working but some people might be only working the destruction of Hometree scen while others got to do the war scene and the people that worked only got to see the scene they worked on so they had no idea how the movie would go etc. until it actualy came out to theatres or until they had the viewing party thing.

thats all I can remember for now folks but ill post more info as it comes to mind and im getting tired so that doesnt help

Thanks for the report!  Sounds as though it was an enlightening experience, much like the documentaries about the making of the most recent Star Wars films.  If you remember anything else, I'm sure we'd love to hear about it!

Emtokay

just remembered a little bit more

he said it would take 24hrs to render 1 frame of the movie, and there is 24 frames per second and the movie goes for 162mins

The 3d effect it done because theyd render 2 copies of the one frame, one would be rendered for the Left Eye and one would done for the Right, the version of Avatar in 2D is just the Left Eye version, 3D is both together and thats why you need the glasses to focus on the picture more

Wow.  So, I suppose rendering was being done on more than one computer at a time, right?  Assuming one computer can render one frame in 24 hours, it would take years to render all the frames with one computer.

Emtokay

yeh there was more then one computer and they had to have 2Tb of RAM and were spitting out over 5Tb of data a day so they were forever deleting old stuff etc.

So what if this is technically necroposting. But just wow! You lucky swine, I'd die to get a looksee in there!

One thing I do not understand is; if Avatar is 162 minutes, at 24 frames per second, each takes a full 24 hour day to render.

That's 639 years and 45 days of rendering time then!

That's what the 35000 CPU cores are for. Each computing node consisting of 16 cores, renders one frame at a time, and the 24 hours are, what that single job takes on this core. If I do the math this makes 106 days for rendering the full movie.

So they didn't start rendering the movie in the year 1370 then.

and times that by 2 cause to get the 3D effect they have to render it for both the left and right eye, making it 212 days of rendering

It's less than 24 hours to render, I think they've got it down to about 12~16 hours now.

However, they're doing more than one rendering of some of the frames (besides 3D) due to graphical glitches or a change.

I wonder if it will ever be possible to render that level in real time.
