I think that my list is going to reflect my age a bit here:

1) Contact
2) The Abyss (Hey, it's still James Cameron)
3) A New Hope
4) LOTR
5) Donny Darko
6) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
7) Back to the Future
8) Kung Fu Panda
9) Avatar
10) Rocky Horror Picture Show

Avatar would be higher up the list if it had made me a) cry b) laugh 'till I had to find a restroom c) freaked me out totally. Of course it is still a rollicking good movie and hence on my list.

Kiyoshi Tenshi

1) Avatar
2) Spirited Away
3) Ponyo
4) Howl's Moving castle
5) Castle in the Sky
6) My Neighbor Totoro

Avatar is the only non-anime movie on the list...

I love solar panels, Zero Energy houses, vegetative roofs, permeable paving & rainwater harvesting, but that still isn't green enough for me.

Yes, indeed.

And regarding LOTR, Peter Jackson was somewhat limited by what Tolkein wrote.  James Cameron is under no such constraint.   He could theoretically keep setting ever higher professional & award goals, making the Avatar 2 movie, doing more goal setting, making another movie.....  so would it be better for us if he did not reach all his goals & become complacent?   ;D
